Chapter 2 - The Fall of Victoria Sterling

The heavy crystal champagne flute shattered against the base of the grand staircase, spraying sparkling wine and shards of glass across the marble floor. Victoria Sterling’s face, usually carved from cool, untouchable porcelain, cracked under the weight of sheer, unadulterated panic.
“You can’t do this, Julian!” Victoria shrieked, her voice losing its aristocratic composure as she stumbled back against the carved mahogany banister. “You’re making a mistake! I was just helping you manage the estate! I took care of your home when you were drowning in grief!”
Julian Vance didn't flinch. His fingers remained locked around his phone, the glowing screen displaying the encrypted interface of his private wealth-management firm. With a single press of a button, he authorized the immediate freeze of every corporate account, personal trust, and real estate holding linked to Victoria Sterling.
“Managing the estate?” Julian’s voice dropped to a terrifying, lethal whisper that echoed through the high-domed foyer. “You turned my wife into a captive in her own home. You stripped her of her name, her dignity, and her freedom, and forced her to scrub these floors while you sat upstairs drinking champagne in her clothes.”
“She was unstable!” Victoria screamed, her manicured fingers clawing at the wooden railing. “She walked away! She abandoned you! I only gave her a place to stay out of the goodness of my heart—”
“Shut your mouth,” Julian snapped, stepping forward with such ferocious intensity that Victoria recoiled, tripping backward onto the first step of the staircase.
Julian didn't look at her again. He turned his attention back to Clara, who was still kneeling on the floor, surrounded by the remnants of the silver tray and spilled tea. Her hands were bleeding slightly where the porcelain had cut into her palms, but she seemed entirely numb to the pain, her eyes wide and hollow.
Dropping to his knees, Julian ignored the expensive fabric of his trousers as they soaked in the cooling liquid. He reached out with trembling hands, his palms hovering inches from her face, terrified that if he touched her too hard, she might vanish like a ghost.
“Clara,” he breathed, his voice breaking. “Look at me, my love. It’s over. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”
Clara slowly lifted her gaze. For a agonizing second, there was no recognition in her eyes—only the deeply ingrained, survival-instinct terror of someone who had lived under the constant threat of punishment for four long years. But as Julian’s thumb gently brushed away a smear of soot and tear tracks from her cheek, a tremor ran through her frame.
Her lower lip quivered. A ragged sob tore from her throat, raw and agonizing.
“Julian...” she whispered, the name catching in her dry throat like glass. “You... you came back for me.”
“I never stopped looking,” Julian vowed, his chest heaving as tears welled in his own eyes. He wrapped his arms around her frail shoulders, lifting her effortlessly from the floor. She weighed almost nothing—a terrifying testament to the malnutrition and cruelty she had endured right under his nose.
“Security!” Julian roared, the command ringing through the mansion like a gunshot.
Within seconds, the heavy oak front doors flew open. Half a dozen private security guards, hand-picked and intensely loyal to Julian, rushed into the foyer.
“Mr. Vance!” the head of security, Miller, barked, coming to a sharp halt. His eyes darted from Julian holding Clara to a cowering Victoria on the stairs.
“Lock down the entire estate,” Julian commanded, his voice shaking with restrained fury. “No one enters. No one leaves. Detain every single member of the domestic staff in the east wing and confiscate all communication devices. And hold her,” he pointed a lethal finger at Victoria, “in the lower security holding room until the authorities arrive.”

“You can’t do this to me, Julian! I’m a Sterling!” Victoria shrieked as two guards grabbed her by the arms, wrenching her away from the banister as she kicked and screamed like a feral animal. “You’ll regret this! You’ll all regret this!”
Her frantic screams faded as the guards dragged her down the corridor toward the basement levels. But Julian didn’t care. His entire world was narrowed down to the woman trembling against his chest.
