Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

Upstairs in the master suite, the frantic energy of the evening had slowly bled away, replaced by a quiet, fragile stillness.

Clara sat propped up against a mountain of pillows, wearing a soft silk nightgown that Julian had hurriedly had delivered from her favorite boutique earlier that evening. A private physician had already examined her, treating her cuts, checking her vitals, and prescribing a regimen of intravenous nutrition to help her body recover from years of severe neglect.

Julian sat on the edge of the mattress, gently spooning warm chicken broth into her bowl.

Clara swallowed slowly, her dark eyes fixed on his face as if she were memorizing every line, every shadow, afraid that if she blinked, he would dissolve into mist.

“You don’t have to stay here watching me every second,” Clara whispered, her voice still raspy. “The guards are outside. Victoria is gone.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Julian said firmly, setting the empty bowl aside and taking her fragile hand in both of his. “For four years, every time I closed my eyes, I wondered where you were. I imagined every worst-case scenario. But not once—not in my darkest nightmares—did I imagine that you were right here under my roof, suffering because of my blind arrogance.”

“It wasn't your fault, Julian,” Clara said softly, her thumb brushing against the back of his hand. “Victoria... she’s a monster. She knew how to make the walls feel like they were closing in. After the first year, I stopped believing anyone was ever coming for me.”

“I’m so sorry, Clara,” Julian murmured, his voice breaking as a tear finally slipped down his cheek. “I should have checked the security logs. I should have inspected every square inch of this property myself instead of trusting people I shouldn't have.”

“You’re here now,” she whispered, leaning forward and resting her forehead gently against his shoulder.

For a long time, neither of them spoke. The wind howled softly outside the tall windows, rattling the glass against its frames, but inside the room, the oppressive shadows of the past four years seemed to lift, driven away by the warmth of their reunion.

“Tomorrow,” Julian said quietly, his lips brushing her hair, “we’re leaving this house.”

Clara pulled back slightly, looking up at him in surprise. “Leaving? But—this is your home.”

“No,” Julian shook his head, his jaw set with quiet determination. “This house is filled with ghosts and poison. We’re going to the seaside estate in Maine. Just you and me. No staff, no board members, no corporate empire. Just time to heal.”

A genuine, soft smile—the first real smile Julian had seen in half a decade—touched Clara’s lips.

“I’d like that,” she whispered. “I’d like to see the ocean again.”
