Chapter 4 - The Public Execution

Ethan stood behind the mahogany podium, looking out over the five hundred elite guests sitting in the grand ballroom. The spotlight framed his broad shoulders and commanding silhouette, turning the entire room dead quiet within seconds.

Beside the stage, Andrew stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically toward the four federal agents who were now moving smoothly along the side aisles, cutting off all exits from the ballroom.

Ethan adjusted the microphone slightly.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Ethan began, his voice deep, clear, and perfectly composed. “Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of hope, generosity, and the groundbreaking expansion of our Children’s Heart Hospital.”

Applause broke out briefly across the room, led by the hospital board members at Table 1.

Ethan waited for the room to fall silent again before continuing.

“Over the last year,” Ethan said, his gaze sweeping across the front row, stopping directly on Andrew, “the Carter Foundation has pledged over forty million dollars to ensure that our medical facilities are led by individuals of highest moral integrity, compassion, and honour.”

Andrew took a slow step backward toward the stage curtain, preparing to slip away into the backstage corridor.

“Do not move, Dr. Vaughn,” Ethan’s voice cut through the sound system like a whip.

The entire ballroom gasped. Heads turned sharply toward the side of the stage where Andrew was standing.

The spotlight operator instinctively shifted a second beam of light, catching Andrew directly in its harsh, white glare.

Andrew blinked, trapped like an animal in headlights, forcing a tight, panicked laugh. “Ethan... what is the meaning of this? Is this part of the presentation?”

“This is the presentation, Andrew,” Ethan replied calmly. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small black flash drive, placing it on the digital podium terminal. “For the past three hours, forensic IT specialists working for Carter Global Security—alongside federal investigators—have been decrypting the private server hidden in the master study of your Manhattan apartment.”

A collective gasp echoed across five hundred wealthy donors, journalists, and city officials.

I stood behind the stage curtain beside Marcus, holding my breath, my hands clutched over my heart.

“In those files,” Ethan continued, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register, “we uncovered evidence of systematic prescription fraud, illegal kickbacks from offshore pharmaceutical firms, and the blackmail of twelve senior hospital board members.”

The room erupted into chaotic whispers. Several doctors at Table 1 stood up from their chairs in utter shock.

“That’s a lie!” Andrew shouted, his face turning beet-red, his polished doctor persona completely shattering. “This is a defamation campaign! Ethan Carter is using his wealth to destroy my reputation because he’s obsessed with my fiancée!”

Ethan didn't even blink. He touched the digital touchscreen on the podium.

The massive fifty-foot LED screen behind the stage—meant to play the hospital's promotional video—instantly illuminated.

A series of high-definition audio transcripts, bank wire records, and internal hospital emails flooded the screen, highlighting Andrew’s offshore accounts and messages detailing his blackmail operations.

And at the bottom of the screen, a crystal-clear medical photograph from the ER records of Memorial Hospital appeared—showing the bruised ribs and arm injuries of a victim, timestamped three weeks ago.

“Dr. Andrew Vaughn,” Ethan said, looking down at the surgeon with absolute, unyielding coldness. “You are a disgrace to the medical profession. You are a predator who hid behind a doctor's coat and a philanthropist's award.”

The four federal agents stepped up onto the stage, producing a pair of steel handcuffs.

“Andrew Vaughn,” the lead agent announced loudly into the silent room. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, extortion, and felony assault.”

Andrew looked around the room in absolute horror. The senators, the CEOs, the wealthy donors who had cheered for him five minutes ago were now staring at him with undisguised disgust and revulsion. Photographers’ flashes exploded in his face, capturing every second of his public ruin.

As the agents slammed his hands behind his back and snapped the steel handcuffs around his wrists, Andrew looked up at the stage curtain where I was standing.

“Ava!” Andrew screamed, struggling against the agents’ grip as he was dragged down the stage steps. “You bitch! You gave him the passwords! You destroyed me!”

Ethan stepped away from the podium, walked over to the side of the stage, and placed his body directly between Andrew and me, blocking the disgraced doctor’s view completely.

“Take him out,” Ethan ordered the agents flatly.

As Andrew was dragged out through the rear exit in handcuffs before fifty news cameras, Ethan turned to face me.

He reached out his hand, his eyes burning with a deep, profound tenderness that made the rest of the world vanish.

“It’s over, Ava,” Ethan whispered softly. “He will never touch you again.”
