Chapter 3 - The Lion’s Den

The grand ballroom of Carter Tower was a dazzling sea of black tuxedos, glittering floor-length gowns, and crystal chandeliers. Over five hundred of the country’s most influential leaders—senators, Wall Street titans, medical directors, and international donors—sat at round tables decorated with white orchids and silver champagne buckets.

Near the front of the grand stage sat Table 1, reserved for the hospital’s executive committee and their families.

When Ethan and I walked out of the private executive elevator near the side of the stage, the room buzzed with renewed energy. Photographers’ flashes went off like blinding lightning strikes.

I tried to slide my hand out of Ethan’s grip to assume my professional place behind the podium, but his fingers held mine with gentle, immovable firmness. He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the whispers sweeping through the room.

Across the ballroom, near the VIP green room doors, stood Dr. Andrew Vaughn.

He was thirty-four years old, striking, with silver-dusted dark hair, a perfectly tailored Brioni tuxedo, and the immaculate, trustworthy posture of a world-class pediatric cardiac surgeon. To the world, Andrew was a golden god—a man who saved dying children by day and attended charity galas by night.

When Andrew’s sharp blue eyes caught sight of Ethan and me stepping onto the side of the stage together, his smile froze. His eyes flicked down to our joined hands. A flash of dark, possessive fury flickered across his face before he quickly smoothed it over with his practiced, charming public smile.

Andrew excused himself from two state senators and walked briskly toward the stage stairs, holding a crystal glass of scotch.

“Ethan,” Andrew said, his voice smooth as silk as he reached the top step. “An incredible turnout tonight. The foundation has really outdone itself.”

Andrew’s gaze shifted to me, his eyes dropping to the high collar of my black silk blouse, searching for any sign of exposure.

“Ava, darling,” Andrew said, his tone dripping with fake affection as he stepped toward me, extending his arm to pull me away from Ethan’s side. “There you are. I was looking for you in the lobby. You’ve been away from my side for nearly twenty minutes. Guests are asking where the miracle surgeon’s bride-to-be has wandered off to.”

Before Andrew’s fingers could touch my waist, Ethan stepped smoothly between us, his tall, imposing figure completely blocking Andrew’s reach.

“Dr. Vaughn,” Ethan said, his voice so quiet and dangerous that Andrew’s smile faltered slightly. “I’m afraid Miss Vance won't be joining you at Table 1 tonight.”

Andrew’s brow furrowed in mild amusement, though his eyes turned icy cold. “I beg your pardon, Ethan? Ava is my fiancée. Her place is beside me at the head table.”

“Her place,” Ethan replied, looking down at the surgeon with undisguised contempt, “is wherever she feels safe. And right now, that is anywhere away from you.”

The air between the two men became so charged that two nearby security guards instinctively straightened their posture, hovering near the stage curtains.

Andrew took a small sip of his scotch, his knuckles whitening around the glass. “Ethan, I suggest you be very careful. You’re a very wealthy man, but this is my hospital’s night. If you’re attempting to cause a scene over my assistant’s schedule—”

“She’s not your assistant,” Ethan cut him off flatly. “She’s my executive assistant. And as of five minutes ago, she is under the direct, personal protection of Carter Enterprises.”

Andrew leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper meant only for the three of us. “Ava... get over here right now. You have three seconds before I pull the private server logs from my apartment and send them to every major news outlet in Manhattan.”

I trembled violently behind Ethan’s shoulder, the terror returning like a wave of ice water.

Ethan didn't flinch. A slow, terrifying smile touched the corners of his lips.

“Go ahead, Andrew,” Ethan whispered back. “Try to send them. Check your phone.”

Andrew frowned, pulling his gold-cased phone from his tuxedo pocket. He tapped the screen.

The screen was completely blank. A red warning icon flashed across the display: SERVER DISCONNECTED – ACCESS DENIED BY FEDERAL WARRANT.

Andrew’s face drained of every ounce of color.

At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom opened.

Four men in sharp grey suits—agents from the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation—walked into the ballroom, accompanied by Marcus, Ethan’s head of security.

Ethan leaned down toward Andrew’s ear, his voice carrying the finality of an executioner’s axe.

“You thought you were receiving a humanitarian award tonight, Andrew,” Ethan whispered softly. “Instead, you’re going to be the main topic of a federal indictment for extortion, medical fraud, and physical assault.”

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium microphone, his voice booming across the five hundred guests.

“Ladies and gentlemen! Please welcome the Chairman of the Carter Foundation... Mr. Ethan Carter!”

Ethan looked back at me, releasing my hand gently, his grey eyes shining with warmth.

“Stay right here with Marcus,” Ethan whispered to me. “Watch what happens when someone tries to hurt you in my city.”

Ethan walked up to the center podium, stepping into the blinding spotlight as thunderous applause echoed through the room.
