Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

The temperature inside the private dressing suite dropped into sub-zero silence.

Ethan Carter didn't blink. The sharp, aristocratic angles of his jawline hardened into solid granite. For eleven months, I had seen him handle hostile corporate takeovers, ruthless hedge fund managers, and high-stakes international negotiations with an unshakeable, cool elegance. But in that moment, as the echo of my confession died down between us, something primal and terrifying sparked behind his slate-grey eyes.

“Andrew Vaughn,” Ethan said. It wasn't a question. It was a cold, quiet statement of fact that carried the weight of a death sentence.

I pressed the palm of my hand against my sternum, trying to stop the frantic, erratic hammering of my heart beneath my black silk blouse. “Ethan, listen to me. He has connections with the board. He has the entire medical establishment in his pocket. His father sits on the state medical review commission. If you say anything tonight—”

“If I say anything?” Ethan interrupted softly. He took one long, measured step toward me, closing the physical gap between us until I could smell the subtle, clean scent of cedarwood and bergamot that always followed him. He didn't touch me—he never touched me without permission—but his presence formed an impenetrable shield between me and the hallway door. “Ava, you are standing in my building, bleeding under your clothes, telling me that the man receiving a humanitarian award downstairs is a monster.”

“He will ruin you,” I whispered, tears finally burning the corners of my eyes. “Andrew is paranoid. He tracks my phone, Ethan. He hired a private investigator three months ago just to monitor who I talk to at work! He thinks I’m having an affair with you! If he finds out you saw these bruises, he won't just hurt me—he will destroy the foundation’s expansion. He will pulled his medical team from the pediatric wing!”

Ethan slowly reached into his suit jacket pocket. He pulled out a sleek, black encrypted mobile phone, unlocked it with a thumbprint, and tapped the screen twice.

“Marcus,” Ethan spoke into the phone, his tone completely flat, devoid of anger, which made it ten times more terrifying. “Execute Option Delta for tonight’s program. Hold Dr. Vaughn in the green room under the pretext of an exclusive press briefing with the New York Times. Do not let him leave the room until I arrive downstairs.”

He ended the call without waiting for a reply, slipping the phone back into his tailored pocket.

I stared at him in utter disbelief. “What did you just do?”

“I just bought us seven minutes,” Ethan said. He stepped closer, his gaze sweeping over my pale face, stopping at the high silk collar I had fastened tight around my throat to hide the dark purple thumbprints near my collarbone. “Ava... how long?”

I swallowed hard, my throat feeling like dry glass. “Since the engagement party six months ago. It started with slamming doors... throwing glasses against the wall when he was stressed after a long surgery. Then it became a slap. Then... he realized if he hit me where my clothes covered, no one at the hospital would ever know.”

Ethan’s breathing hitched. A muscle in his jaw twitched violently. He reached out a hand, his fingers hovering half an inch away from my cheek, trembling slightly before he forced his hand back down to his side.

“Why didn't you come to me?” Ethan asked, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing guilt that shattered what was left of my composure. “Ava... you sit outside my office eight hours a day. I would have burned this city to the ground for you.”

“That’s why I couldn't tell you,” I choked out, a single tear spilling down my cheek. “Because you would have burned it down, Ethan. And Andrew would have used your power against you. He would have claimed you were using your billions to steal his fiancée, that you fabricated allegations to ruin a top surgeon. He has videotapes, Ethan... he installed hidden cameras in his apartment. He threatened to release edited footage to the press if I ever tried to leave him!”

Ethan stared at me, his eyes narrowing into cold, lethal focus. “Videotapes?”

“In his private study,” I nodded, my whole body shaking. “In a vault behind the bookcase. He keeps everything there... every recording, every document he uses to blackmail his colleagues.”

Ethan looked down at his silver watch. 7:22 p.m.

The thunderous sound of applause echoed up from the grand ballroom below as the master of ceremonies opened the evening’s festivities.

Ethan reached out and gently took my right hand. His grip was warm, solid, and so incredibly safe that I nearly collapsed against his chest.

“Ava,” Ethan said, looking directly into my eyes with an unshakeable, fierce certainty. “You are never going back to his apartment. You are never putting that ring back on your finger. And tonight, Dr. Andrew Vaughn is going to discover what happens when you touch the only thing in this world I care about.”

He turned toward the door, holding my hand tightly in his.

“Come with me,” Ethan commanded softly. “It’s time to change the schedule.”
