Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

By morning, the high-society tabloids were ablaze with headlines regarding the scandal at the Vance estate. “Vance Heir Abandons Sterling Engagement for Surprise Child,” read the front page of the financial chronicle.

Victoria Sterling’s father had already launched an aggressive media campaign to smear Caleb’s reputation, claiming he was emotionally unstable and demanding an immediate emergency meeting of the Vance Group Board of Directors to strip Caleb of his Chief Executive title.

Inside his warm, sunlit townhome—far away from his mother's estate—Caleb sat at the kitchen counter making pancakes. Sadie was sitting on a high stool, carefully coloring a picture of a rabbit with a bright pink crayon.

The front door opened, and Marcus Vance—Caleb’s younger brother and the only member of the family who had rejected Evelyn's controlling web years ago—walked in, carrying two large cups of coffee and a thick leather briefcase.

"You really lit the whole kingdom on fire, didn't you, big bro?" Marcus said with a sad, gentle smile, setting the coffee down. He walked over to Sadie and gave her a small, respectful wave. "Hey there, little niece. I'm your Uncle Marcus."

Sadie offered a shy smile, holding up her rabbit drawing. "He's pink."

"He's majestic," Marcus corrected with a grin before turning to Caleb. His expression darkened. "Mom is pulling out every weapon she has, Caleb. She’s calling in favors from every board member. She’s telling the press that Mara was an extortionist and that you’ve fallen victim to a scam."

"Let her try," Caleb said, setting a plate of pancakes in front of Sadie. "I have the paternity test, Marcus. And I have Mara's letter detailing how Mother threatened her father's business."

Marcus paused, looking gravely at his brother. "Caleb... there’s something else. When I heard about what happened last night, I started digging through the old family legal files. Mara's father—Arthur Lin—didn't go bankrupt because of tax fraud."

Caleb stopped mid-motion. "What do you mean?"

"The manufacturing company Arthur owned had its patents secretly bought out by a dummy corporation six years ago," Marcus explained, sliding a legal report across the island. "That dummy corporation was registered under Victoria Sterling’s father. Mom didn't just threaten Mara, Caleb. She teamed up with Richard Sterling to bankrupt Mara's family so Victoria could take her place beside you."

Caleb gripped the edge of the granite counter until his knuckles turned white. The conspiracy ran far deeper than his mother's snobbery; it was a cold, calculated corporate robbery that had destroyed Mara's family and stolen five years of his daughter's life.

"They think I'm going to defend my title at the board meeting on Friday," Caleb said, his voice dropping to an icy register.

"Aren't you?" Marcus asked.

"No," Caleb replied, looking over at Sadie, who was happily eating her breakfast. "I'm not going to defend it. I'm going to take everything they stole and hand it back to the people who deserve it."
