Chapter 3 - The Broken Dynasty

"Where did you get that?" Evelyn demanded, taking a swift step into the room, her voice losing its polished composure.

"From Mara's daughter," Caleb spat, stepping directly between his mother and Sadie. "From my daughter."

Evelyn scoffed, attempting to recover her ground. "Caleb, don't be naive! That woman was a scheming gold-digger who tried to trap you when your father left you his shares of the firm! You don't know whose child that is! She brought a random orphan to ruin your engagement with Victoria!"

Caleb held up the second document from the envelope—the certified DNA report bearing the seal of the Washington State Medical Board.

"It’s mine, Mother. It was verified five years ago," Caleb said, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and lethal fury. "You knew Mara was pregnant. You knew she was dying. You let my child spend two years in the state foster system while you picked out my wedding china!"

Evelyn’s face hardened into a mask of cold arrogance. "I did what was necessary to preserve this family! That girl—that broke, nameless artist—would have ruined your standing in the Vance Group! Look at you! You were supposed to merge our holdings with the Sterling family tonight! And instead, you're holding a piece of paper written by a dead woman!"

"Get out," Caleb said quietly.

"Excuse me?" Evelyn gasped.

"Get out of this room. Get out of my house," Caleb repeated, taking a step toward her. "If you ever step foot near Sadie again, if you ever speak her name, I will take every share of Vance Group I own and burn your legacy to the ground."

"You wouldn't dare," Evelyn hissed, her fingers tightening around her clutch. "Without the Sterling merger, the board will vote you out by the end of the month!"

"Then let them," Caleb said, looking her straight in the eye. "Now get out before I have security throw you onto the street."

Evelyn stared at her son, realizing for the very first time that the obedient heir she had cultivated for three decades was gone forever. She turned on her heel and stormed out, the sharp snap of her heels echoing down the hallway like gunshots.

Caleb turned back to the bed. Sadie was watching him, her small hands still resting on the gray suitcase.

He walked over, sat down gently beside her, and pulled the wet sweater off her shoulders, replacing it with his own soft cashmere sweater. He wrapped her in a blanket and pulled her small body into a warm, fierce embrace.

"I'm sorry, Sadie," Caleb whispered, his tears falling into her dark curls. "I'm so sorry it took me so long to find you."

Sadie rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. "Are you going to keep Mommy's letter?"

"I'm going to keep it forever," Caleb promised. "And nobody is ever taking you away again."
