Chapter 6 - The Ambush at the Lake

Ivy slammed open the heavy glass doors of the boardroom, interrupting a meeting of twenty senior vice presidents.

Ronan, standing at the head of the marble conference table, stopped mid-sentence. The moment he saw the pale, fierce terror in Ivy’s eyes, he dropped his digital pointer.

"Clear the room," Ronan ordered quietly.

The executives didn't ask questions; they scrambled out the side doors within ten seconds.

"What happened?" Ronan asked, stepping close and grabbing her shoulders.

"Vivien called from jail," Ivy gasped, her breath coming in ragged bursts. "Dominic Vance—Julian’s brother. She said he sent men to the Lake Geneva estate for Leo!"

Ronan’s eyes went completely black with rage. The calm billionaire vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless underworld kingpin who ruled Chicago's shadows.

He pulled a secure satellite phone from his pocket and hit speed dial. "Leo! Security code red at the main house! Move the boy to the panic room now!"

Static hummed through the speaker, followed by the sound of gunfire and shattering glass over the line.

"Mr. Blackwood!" Malcolm’s voice cracked over the phone from the estate. "They cut the main gates! There are eight armed men on the lawn! Bruno has engaged them in the foyer, but—"

A heavy explosion rocked the audio feed, followed by dead static.

"MALCOLM!" Ronan roared into the phone.

Nothing.

Ivy grabbed Ronan’s forearm, her eyes burning with fierce determination. "We have to go. Now!"

Ten minutes later, Ronan’s private Sikorsky helicopter was roaring through the dark, stormy clouds over Lake Michigan, flying at full throttle toward the Lake Geneva estate.

Inside the cabin, Ronan was strapping on a tactical shoulder holster, his jaw set like granite. Beside him, Ivy was loading a heavy flash-bang canister into a launcher—a skill she had learned during her father’s security training years ago.

"You stay in the chopper when we land, Ivy," Ronan commanded, his voice tight with fear for her safety. "Dominic Vance is a butcher. He doesn't care about corporate law."

"Leo is six years old, Ronan!" Ivy shouted over the deafening roar of the helicopter blades. "He saved me a piece of rosemary bread when I was bleeding on your floor! I am NOT sitting in a helicopter while men with guns try to hurt him!"

Ronan looked at her—at her high heels discarded, her emerald suit jacket rolled up, her eyes blazing with an unyielding, protective fury that matched his own.

A dark, proud grin broke through his tension. He reached into his tactical vest and handed her a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol.

"Safety's off," Ronan said softly. "Don't miss."

"I never miss," Ivy replied.
