Chapter 5 - The War for Chicago

By Monday morning, the news of the Hale family's downfall had swept through Chicago like a firestorm.
The front page of the Chicago Tribune featured a high-resolution photo of Vivien Hale being led away in handcuffs, alongside an explosive article detailing the multi-million-dollar wire fraud scheme uncovered by Blackwood Enterprises' newly appointed Chief Auditor: Miss Ivy Bennett.
The social circles that had once mocked Ivy were now desperately trying to send her flowers, apology letters, and invitations to private luncheons.
Ivy ignored them all.
Sitting in her sleek, new corner office on the forty-fifth floor of Blackwood Tower in downtown Chicago, Ivy wore a stunning emerald-green tailored suit that hugged her generous curves with fierce, professional elegance. Her dark hair was styled in polished waves, and on her lapel sat a small, gold brooch shaped like a Malinois dog—a personal gift from Ronan.
A knock sounded at her door.
"Come in," Ivy said, signing off on a legal document transferring Vance's seized assets back to Arthur Bennett’s estate.
Malcolm, wearing a sharp grey suit, walked in holding a large velvet box and a steaming cup of dark roast coffee.
"Good morning, Miss Bennett," Malcolm said warmly, setting the coffee on her mahogany desk. "Mr. Blackwood asked me to deliver this before the board meeting at ten."
Ivy smiled at the old butler, who had become her closest ally in the estate. "Thank you, Malcolm. What’s in the box?"
Malcolm opened the velvet casing to reveal a magnificent silver-and-pearl fountain pen—the exact pen her father had used before his firm was liquidated three years ago. Ronan’s private investigators had tracked it down at a high-end pawn shop in New York and bought it back.
A soft tear pricked Ivy’s eye as she lifted the heavy pen.
Attached was a small note in Ronan’s bold handwriting:
To the woman who rewrote my future. Use this to clear your father's name today. Forever yours, R.
"He’s in the main boardroom with the bank executives now," Malcolm added with a quiet smile. "He’s been utterly intolerable to the legal team this morning—he keeps asking every ten minutes if you've arrived yet."
Ivy laughed softly, setting the note aside. "Tell him I’ll be there in five minutes."
However, as Malcolm turned to leave, the desk phone rang sharp and loud.
Ivy picked up the receiver. "Ivy Bennett."
"Ivy... you fat, miserable bitch," a raspy, venomous voice hissed through the line.
Ivy’s posture instantly straightened. "Vivien."
Vivien was calling from the Cook County Women's Correction Facility. Her voice was wild, unhinged, and stripped of all social polish.
"You think you won, don't you?" Vivien laughed hysterically over the static connection. "You think because Ronan gave you a pretty suit and a title that you're safe? You don't know who my father works with, Ivy! You don't know what's coming for you!"
"Your father is currently facing twenty years in federal prison for racketeering, Vivien," Ivy replied calmly, her tone as cold as winter ice. "And you are facing fifteen for attempted murder and corporate fraud. I suggest you save your breath for your bail hearing."
"Julian’s brother isn't in prison!" Vivien screamed through the receiver. "Dominic Vance controls the South Side docks! He’s already sent his men to the estate! Your little nephew—that brat Leo—he won't make it to his bedtime tonight!"
Ivy’s heart dropped like a stone into her stomach.
May you like
Leo.
She slammed the phone down, grabbed her coat, and burst out of her office, running straight toward the executive boardroom at the end of the hall.
