Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Fraud

By 5:00 p.m., I was sitting at the head of the mahogany conference table on the top floor of Carter Logistics.

Beside me sat Arthur Sterling, along with a team of four independent forensic accountants I had hired two months prior when I first suspected Daniel's infidelity.

“Mrs. Carter,” the lead accountant, a sharp woman named Marcus, laid out a thick stack of financial audits. “It’s far worse than simple corporate neglect. Over the last eighteen months, Daniel Carter and Vanessa Brooks have systematically embezzled $6.8 million from the company’s capital reserve fund.”

I didn't blink. “Where did the money go?”

“Directly into shell companies registered under Vanessa Brooks’ brother in the Cayman Islands,” Marcus explained, sliding a bank wire confirmation across the glass table. “They were preparing to bankrupt Carter Logistics, buy out the liquidated assets for pennies on the dollar through their shell firm, and strip you of your equity before filing for divorce.”

Arthur smiled grimly. “They weren't just cheating on you, Emily. They were planning a full hostile takeover of your life.”

“Then we strike hard,” I said, resting my hands on the table. “Freeze every bank account associated with those shell companies. Issue a civil fraud lawsuit against Daniel and Vanessa personally, and hand the forensic file directly to the District Attorney's financial crimes unit.”

“And what about the company’s leadership?” Arthur asked.

I took off my silk scarf, revealing the jagged, uneven remnants of my hair. I looked at my reflection in the dark window overlooking the city skyline.

“Call an emergency press conference for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow,” I ordered, my voice ringing with absolute authority. “It’s time the public meets the real CEO.”
