Chapter 3 - The True Owner of Carter Logistics

Daniel stared at the document in Arthur’s hands, his face losing all color.
For seven years, Daniel had walked through the halls of Carter Logistics like a king. He loved the title. He loved the news interviews, the luxury company cars, and the deferential nods from staff. He had convinced himself—and the world—that he was the sole mastermind behind the company's multi-million-dollar expansion.
He had forgotten who wrote the original check.
Ten years ago, before we were married, Carter Logistics was a struggling three-truck operation on the brink of bankruptcy. My father, a titan in commercial real estate, had provided the 80% seed capital under a private holding company called Vanguard Heritage LLC.
When I married Daniel, I placed my 80% majority stake into an irrevocable trust. I allowed Daniel to act as CEO, taking 15% equity and a generous salary, while I stepped into the background to let him shine. I didn't care about the spotlight. I cared about supporting my husband.
Under the terms of the Vanguard Operating Agreement, if the CEO committed acts of gross moral turpitude, financial negligence, or physical harm against a beneficiary of the trust, the majority shareholder retained the absolute right to trigger an immediate, non-negotiable expulsion.
And Vanessa’s assault in the executive restroom was recorded on three different security cameras.
“This is a mistake!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with rising panic. “My wife is emotional! We had a personal disagreement!”
“A personal disagreement?” Arthur smiled coldly. He tapped a tablet on his arm, and a crisp video feed played aloud.
It showed Vanessa pinning me against the vanity in the executive restroom, screaming obscenities while using a pair of industrial heavy-duty scissors to hack away at my hair, while Daniel stood near the door, doing nothing to stop her.
The police officers behind Arthur exchanged dark glances.
“Mr. Carter,” Officer Miller stepped forward. “You and Ms. Brooks need to step away from the desk.”
Vanessa’s confidence crumbled instantly. She turned to Daniel, clutching his arm in terror. “Daniel! Do something! Tell them to get out! You're the boss!”
Daniel shoved her hand off his arm. “Shut up, Vanessa!”

“Don't you yell at me!” she shrieked, her voice turning shrill. “I did this because you told me you were divorcing her this week! You told me she was taking up space in your life!”
Arthur signaled to the security chief. “Escort Ms. Brooks to the lobby. The police are waiting to book her for felony assault, destruction of personal property, and hate-motivated bodily harm.”
