Chapter 8 - Healing the Broken

A month later.

The scent of fresh yellow paint and cinnamon rolls filled Elena’s warm, sunlit three-bedroom suburban home.

In the backyard, the morning sun shone down on a freshly built wooden playhouse. Marcus Vance was leaning against the porch railing, holding a cup of fresh coffee, watching as Noah and Maya ran across the green grass.

Maya looked entirely different from the frail girl who had been rescued from the dark cottage. Her dark hair was shiny and neatly trimmed, her cheeks carried a healthy pink glow, and she wore a bright yellow sundress.

She was holding a blue plastic bubble wand, laughing as Noah chased the floating bubbles around the yard.

“She gained four pounds this week,” Elena said, stepping out onto the porch with a tray of fresh lemonade.

Marcus smiled, looking at the children. “Dr. Vance says her blood panels are completely clean now. The sedatives are entirely out of her system.”

“She asks about David every night,” Elena whispered, her eyes shining with emotion. “I show her old videos of him. She has his laugh, Marcus. She really does.”

Noah came running up the wooden steps, holding a handful of wild dandelions.

“Mom! Look!” Noah cheered, thrusting the flowers toward her. “Maya and I picked these for the kitchen table!”

Maya walked up behind him, a shy but genuine smile lighting up her face. She looked up at Elena, reaching out to gently hold the hem of Elena’s cardigan—a habit she had picked up whenever she felt safe.

Elena knelt down, wrapping both children in a warm, tight hug.

“They’re beautiful, sweetheart,” Elena said, kissing Noah’s forehead, then placing a gentle kiss on Maya’s cheek. “Let's put them in water right now.”
