Chapter 7 - The Grand Audit

Over the next two weeks, the Mercer empire crumbled like a castle built on sand.
The federal investigation triggered by Marcus Vance exposed a decades-long trail of financial corruption, medical malpractice, and systematic abuse orchestrated by Margaret Mercer.
From her cell at the county correctional facility, Margaret watched as state prosecutors seized every bank account, property, and shell company associated with the Mercer Family Medical Trust.
Grant Mercer, realizing his mother was facing life imprisonment, turned state’s evidence from his own jail cell. He provided full sworn testimony detailing how Margaret had faked Maya’s death certificates, bribed state inspectors, and ordered him to physically intimidate Noah to keep the medical trust active.
Dr. Aris Thorne was stripped of his medical license permanently and indicted on multiple counts of illegal administration of narcotics to a minor.
In a landmark court ruling presided over by Family Court Judge Brenda Sterling, Margaret Mercer was stripped of all legal guardianship, parental rights, and trustee privileges.
“The actions of Margaret Mercer represent the darkest impulses of human greed,” Judge Sterling declared from the bench, her voice echoing through the packed courtroom. “She treated innocent children as bargaining chips for wealth.”
The judge turned her attention to Elena, who sat at the petitioner’s table holding Noah’s hand on her left and Maya’s hand on her right.
“Elena Mercer,” Judge Sterling spoke warmly. “You have demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and fierce maternal devotion. It is the ruling of this court that you are granted full, permanent legal custody and sole guardianship of Maya Sterling Mercer.”
A soft murmur of joy swept through the gallery.

The judge slammed her gavel down. “Furthermore, all assets belonging to the late David Mercer’s estate are hereby placed into a secure, independent trust managed exclusively for the future health, education, and well-being of Noah and Maya Mercer.”
Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The battle was over. The nightmare had finally ended.
