Chapter 6 - Breaking the Cage

Twenty minutes later, three police cruisers and an emergency medical vehicle pulled up to the rear gates of the Mercer estate.

Elena rushed down the garden path toward the guest cottage, Marcus right behind her.

Inside the small basement room, Nurse Hayes was frantically packing a duffel bag when the door was kicked open by uniformed officers.

“Step away from the child!” Marcus ordered, drawing his weapon.

Nurse Hayes dropped the bag, raising her hands in the air as officers secured her.

Elena didn't waste a second. She ran past the police, dropping to her knees beside the small twin bed where Maya sat huddled in fear, holding a small wooden crayon tightly in her tiny fist.

“Don't hurt me...” Maya whimpered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “I drank the medicine... I was good...”

Elena felt her heart break into a thousand pieces. She slowly reached out, keeping her hands visible, her eyes warm and gentle.

“Nobody is ever going to force you to drink that medicine again, sweetheart,” Elena said, her voice shaking with emotion. “My name is Elena. I was married to your daddy, David.”

Maya blinked through her tears, her small body trembling. “My... my daddy?”

Elena pulled a framed photograph from her purse—a picture of David smiling warmly at a beach house—and held it out.

Maya looked at the photo, her tiny fingers reaching out to touch the glass. “Grandma said Daddy went away because I was bad...”

“Grandma lied to you,” Elena said fiercely, wiping a tear from Maya’s cheek. “Your daddy loved you more than anything in the world. And he left me a little boy named Noah... your little brother.”

Maya’s eyes went wide. “The boy in the picture? He’s... he’s real?”

“He’s waiting outside right now,” Elena smiled softly, holding out her arms. “Will you let me take you to him?”

Maya looked at Elena’s open arms, then at the open door leading out into the bright morning light. For seven years, she had known only concrete walls, bitter medicine, and terrifying threats.

Slowly, timidly, the little girl leaned forward, collapsing into Elena’s embrace. Elena wrapped her arms around the frail child, holding her tight, burying her face in Maya’s matted hair as tears of pure relief overflowed.
