Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Hudson

Spring arrived early in the Hudson Valley the following year, washing away the bitter memories of the winter blizzard with vibrant green grass, blooming dogwood trees, and a warm, golden sun that danced across the surface of the river.

The estate had changed.

The iron locks on the wine cellar were gone, replaced by fine vintage racks filled with legitimate acquisitions. The security protocols had been entirely overhauled, but the heavy iron gates no longer felt like a prison; they felt like a shield protecting a sanctuary.

In the grand garden behind the east wing, Harper was chasing a golden retriever across the lawn, her laughter echoing clear and bright against the stone walls of the mansion.

On the terrace, sitting at a wrought-iron table overlooking the river, Mia Carter poured a cup of fresh coffee. She wore a light summer sundress, her wrists completely healed, the silver bird pendant resting peacefully against her collarbone.

Footsteps sounded softly behind her.

Dominic walked out onto the terrace, carrying a second cup of coffee. He sat down across from her, resting his hands on the table.

“She’s going to run the dog ragged before lunch,” Dominic observed with a faint, amused smile, watching Harper tumble onto the grass with the golden retriever.

“She has a lot of energy to make up for,” Mia replied softly, turning her gaze toward him. Her eyes were warm, filled with a deep, abiding peace that had been missing for years. “Though I think you spoil her too much. She has three ponies in the stable now, Dominic.”

“A girl needs proper transportation around an estate this size,” Dominic deadpanned, taking a sip of his coffee.

Mia laughed—a light, musical sound that made the Hudson Valley estate feel less like a fortress and more like an actual home.

Dominic reached across the table, his fingers gently brushing against her hand. Mia didn't pull away; she turned her palm upward, interlocking her fingers with his.

“The new ledgers arrived from the Manhattan accountants this morning,” Dominic said quietly, his dark eyes holding hers with absolute devotion. “Everything is clean. Legitimate. Real estate, shipping, foundations. We’re out of the shadows, Mia.”

“I know,” Mia whispered, leaning in slightly. “And we’re never going back.”

Across the lawn, Harper stopped chasing the dog, looked up toward the terrace, and waved enthusiastically with both hands, shouting something about a butterfly she had just discovered.

Dominic waved back, a genuine, unburdened smile touching his lips.

The mafia boss had spent half his life surrounded by blood, betrayal, and ghosts. But as he sat in the warm spring sunlight with the woman who had saved his empire and the little girl who had trusted him in the dark, Dominic Vale finally understood what it meant to win.
