Chapter 9 - Judgment Day

The underground tribunal room beneath the Hudson Valley estate had been cleared of its halogen work-lights. Instead, it was illuminated by the harsh, overhead industrial fixtures, casting long, stark shadows across the concrete floor.

It was time for the final reckoning.

Nathan Cross and Claire Bennett sat side by side, handcuffed to the same heavy iron chair where Nathan had been interrogated hours earlier. Their designer clothes were ruined, their faces etched with exhaustion, defeat, and the creeping terror of the inevitable.

The heavy steel door swung open.

Dominic Vale walked in, flanked by Marcus and Daniel. He didn't wear a coat. He wore a crisp black suit, his tie neatly knotted, his expression carved from absolute, unyielding granite.

He stopped five feet in front of them and looked down.

“Dom,” Nathan croaked, his voice cracking from thirst and panic. “Dom, please. We’ve known each other for seventeen years. You can’t do this. Send me to federal prison. Let the courts handle it—!”

“The federal courts deal with white-collar criminals, Nathan,” Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “We are not in a courtroom.”

Claire lifted her head, her eyes flashing with a desperate, cornered fury. “You think you’re untouchable, Dominic! The moment we don't check in with the Brooklyn commission, they’ll come burn this estate to the ground with you and your little maid inside it!”

Dominic let out a cold, humorless laugh.

“Claire, your commission in Brooklyn is currently in the middle of an emergency leadership meeting,” Dominic said smoothly. “Don Salvatore stepped down this morning due to sudden... health complications. The new leadership has already ratified a treaty with me, recognizing the Hudson Valley as sovereign territory. You have no allies left.”

Claire’s face drained of every last trace of color. She slumped back against the chair, her chest heaving as reality finally crushed her last remaining delusion of escape.

Nathan stared at the floor, his shoulders shaking. “What are you going to do with us?”

“You’re going to disappear, Nathan,” Dominic said quietly. “Not in a prison cell where you can plot revenge. Not in a grave where people can mourn you. You’re going to a private cargo freighter leaving port in Newark tonight, bound for an unmarked labor camp in South America that I don't even own, but whose owners owe me favors.”

“No... no, please, Dom!” Nathan sobbed, the tough syndicate adviser completely breaking down. “Kill me! Just put a bullet in my head, don't send me there—!”

“A bullet is too quick for what you did to Elena,” Dominic said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “And it’s too kind for what you tried to do to Mia and her daughter.”

Dominic turned away, signaling to Marcus and Daniel.

“Take them out through the service tunnel. Get them on the truck before dawn. I never want to hear their names spoken in this house again.”

“Understood, Boss,” Marcus said, hauling Nathan and Claire up by their shoulders as they screamed and wept, dragging them kicking and struggling toward the steel exit.

Within minutes, the tribunal room was empty.

Dominic stood alone in the center of the concrete floor, listening to the heavy steel door seal shut. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the silver pocket watch his father had given him, and popped the cover open.

The second hand ticked steadily forward, unbroken, unbothered by the blood and betrayal of the past.

The shadows were gone. The house was clean.
