Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Ledger

The smoke cleared from the master suite in a matter of seconds, leaving behind the acrid smell of gunpowder, burnt carbon, and shattered glass.

Nathan’s three enforcers were already flat on the floor, subdued and zip-tied by Marcus and Daniel before they could even draw their backup pistols.

Claire stumbled backward, her sophisticated composure shattering instantly as she raised her silenced Walther PPK toward Dominic. But before her finger could tighten on the trigger, a heavy boot stamped down on her wrist.

CRACK.

Claire screamed, dropping the gun as it skittered across the polished hardwood floor. Dominic kicked it away into the shadows.

Nathan stood frozen by the bed, his face drained of color. The supreme confidence he had worn only moments before had vanished, replaced by the cold sweat of a man who realized his escape route had just been sealed in reinforced steel.

“You... you planned this,” Nathan breathed, staring at Dominic in disbelief. “You knew before you even walked through the front door.”

Dominic walked slowly toward him, the Sig Sauer still locked in his grip. He didn't fire. He didn't need to. He reached out with his left hand, grabbed Nathan by the collar of his white shirt, and drove him backward until his spine slammed hard against the carved oak headboard.

“I didn't know it was you, Nathan,” Dominic said, his voice dangerously soft. “I hoped to God it wasn't. For seventeen years, I gave you my loyalty. I gave you my trust. I treated you like blood.”

“Dom—listen to me—!” Nathan choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Dominic’s wrists.

“Shut up,” Dominic hissed, throwing him aside like a broken doll. Nathan crumpled onto the rug, gasping for air.

Dominic turned to Marcus, who was standing by the door with a thick, leather-bound ledger in his hands.

“Did you find it?” Dominic asked.

“Found it right where the girl said, Boss,” Marcus replied, stepping forward and handing the ledger over. “Hidden behind the false panel in Claire’s walk-in closet. Every wire transfer, every offshore shell company, every meeting log with the Brooklyn families for the last two years.”

Dominic flipped open the heavy leather cover. The pages were filled with neat, meticulous handwriting—not Nathan’s, but Claire’s. Financial ledgers detailing millions of dollars siphoned from the syndicate’s logistics networks, property acquisitions in the Cayman Islands, and—most damning of all—cryptographic authorization codes linked directly to the accounts of the men who had allegedly tried to assassinate Dominic in Philadelphia six months ago.

Claire was clutching her broken wrist, rocking back and forth on the floor, glaring up at Dominic with pure hatred.

“You think locking us up in a basement will save you?” Claire spat through gritted teeth, her face twisted in agony. “The families in New York already know we moved against you, Dominic! By sunset, every capos, every lieutenant, and every gunman on the eastern seaboard will be hunting for your head!”

Dominic closed the ledger with a heavy thud that echoed through the ruined bedroom.

He looked down at her as if she were an insect crawling across his shoe.

“Let them come,” Dominic said coldly. “I built this empire out of blood and ash once before. Doing it a second time will be a pleasure.”

He turned to Marcus and Daniel.

“Take them down to the sub-basement. Put Nathan in the exact same cell Mia was in. And put Claire in the one right next to him. Let them experience what three days of darkness feels like.”

“No! Dom, you can’t!” Nathan screamed as Marcus hauled him up by his arms, dragging him toward the ruined doorway. “We’re brothers! We built this together!”

“You stopped being my brother seventeen years ago when you cut my wife’s brakes,” Dominic said without looking back.

As the guards dragged the prisoners screaming down the hallway, Dominic stood alone in the center of the shattered suite. The sun had finally broken through the heavy gray clouds over the Hudson River, casting a long, blood-red stripe across the floor.

The war for the syndicate had begun. And Dominic Vale was ready to burn every traitor to ash.
