Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Judgment

The sudden impact of the shipping container shattered the wooden pier decking, sending wood splinters and sea spray fifty feet into the air.

"SNIPERS! FIRE!" Luca roared.

From the crane towers above, muzzle flashes ignited the fog.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

Mercer’s three primary gunmen dropped instantly, shot through their helmets before they could raise their rifles.

Total chaos erupted on the pier.

Luca drew his SIG Sauer, stepping in front of Elena and firing four rapid shots into two hitmen who tried to charge through the smoke. Mateo and six Valenti soldiers rushed out from behind the parked container stacks, engaging the remaining mercenaries in a fierce, close-quarters firefight.

"Caroline!" Elena screamed.

Elena ran through the crossfire, ducking behind an iron winch as bullets whipped through the salt air. She reached her sister, pulling a folding knife from her suit pocket and slicing through the ropes binding Caroline’s wrists.

"Get to the limousine! Go!" Elena yelled, pushing Caroline toward Mateo, who covered her retreat with heavy submachine gun fire.

Across the dock, Adrian Mercer was crawling across the wet pavement, bleeding from a shoulder wound, trying to reach a fallen shotgun.

Luca walked through the smoke like an immortal shadow, his gun lowered at his side, stepping up to Mercer’s trembling form.

"It’s over, Adrian," Luca said coldly.

Mercer rolled onto his back, his face covered in blood and rain. He looked up at Luca, a terrifying, insane grin spreading across his teeth. He pulled a small, concealed derringer pistol from his sleeve and aimed it directly at Luca’s chest.

"If I go to hell, Valenti..." Mercer spat, "you're coming with me!"

BANG!

A gun fired.

Mercer’s eyes widened in shock. The derringer slipped from his fingers. He looked down at his own chest, where a smoking hole had appeared through his cashmere coat.

Luca hadn't fired.

Standing ten feet away, her feet set firm on the wet asphalt, both hands holding Derek Shaw’s custom 9mm pistol in a perfect tactical grip, was Elena.

Smoke curled from the barrel of her weapon.

Mercer coughed once, blood spilling from his lips, and collapsed backward over the edge of the pier, splashing into the dark, freezing waters of the East River below. His body disappeared into the black current, swallowed by the tide.

The gunfire ceased.

The pier went deathly silent save for the drumming rain and the hum of idling SUV engines.

Elena slowly lowered the handgun, her shoulders rising and falling with heavy breaths. Her pristine white gown was soaked with rain and mud at the hem, her dark hair hanging wet around her shoulders.

Luca walked over to her.

He didn't look at Mercer’s empty spot on the pier. He didn't look at the dead hitmen or the damaged shipping containers.

He looked only at her.

He reached out, taking the gun from her hands and handing it to Mateo. Then, he gathered Elena into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest.

Elena rested her cheek against his soaked shoulder, her eyes closing as his heartbeat vibrated against her ear.

"You saved my life," Luca whispered into the rain.

"You saved mine first," she murmured back.

Three days later.

The morning sun broke warm and bright over Manhattan, turning the glass towers of the skyline into shimmering spires of gold.

Inside the grand ballroom of the Valenti estate, the entire syndicate had gathered. Over two hundred capos, soldiers, legitimate business partners, attorneys, and family members stood around the polished marble floor.

At the head of the room, standing before a high arched window overlooking Central Park, stood Luca Valenti.

Beside him stood Elena.

She wore an exquisite dark emerald-green silk dress, her dark hair pinned up with gold filigree, looking striking, powerful, and radiant. Standing near the front row, holding a plate of pastries and smiling through happy tears, was Caroline and little Noah.

Luca raised his hand. The massive room went completely silent.

"For twenty years," Luca’s voice echoed clearly through the hall, "I believed that power was built on fear, on silence, and on the strength of men carrying weapons."

He turned to face Elena, taking her hand in his.

"I was wrong," Luca said softly, his dark eyes shining with an emotion no man in that room had ever seen him display. "True power is built on loyalty. It is built on the courage of someone who refuses to bow to monsters, who defends the people she loves, and who stands beside me when the world burns."

Luca reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy velvet box. He opened it to reveal a magnificent ring—a radiant-cut black diamond surrounded by a halo of micro-pave white diamonds, set in solid platinum.

It was the Valenti Sovereign Ring—the ring worn only by the absolute ruler of the empire.

Luca took the ring and slid it onto the third finger of Elena’s left hand.

"Elena Russo," Luca declared, his voice ringing out across the ballroom with absolute authority. "You are no longer an auditor of this house. You are my wife. You are my equal. And you are the undisputed Queen of Manhattan."

A deafening roar of applause erupted through the ballroom. Capos bowed their heads in genuine respect, soldiers cheered, and glass flutes of champagne were raised into the sunlight.

Elena looked up into Luca’s eyes, a breathtaking, radiant smile illuminating her face.

He leaned down, wrapping his arm around her waist, and kissed her deeply in front of his entire kingdom.
