Chapter 3 - The Council of Snakes

At 3:30 in the morning, the subterranean boardroom beneath the Valenti penthouse felt like a tomb.
The room had no windows. Its walls were reinforced concrete lined with dark mahogany paneling, and the central table was a single slab of black granite surrounded by ten high-backed leather chairs. Air roared softly through hidden ventilation ducts, carrying the smell of stale espresso and rain.
Sitting around the table were the pillars of the Valenti family.
To the left sat Capo Dominic Valenti—Luca’s sixty-two-year-old uncle, a silver-haired veteran with heavy ringed fingers and an attitude built on thirty years of old-school mafia tradition. Next to him sat Capo Paulie, a barrel-chested man who managed the family’s docks along the Hudson River, and Marco, the family’s soft-spoken consigliere.
Luca stood at the head of the table. He had changed into a fresh charcoal-gray suit, a crisp white shirt, and a black silk tie. His dark hair was combed back, his posture immaculate.
Standing half a step behind his right shoulder was Elena.
She wore a dark navy wool trouser suit—simple, tailored, and buttoned to her throat. Her face was pale, but her eyes were steady. She carried a leather-bound digital tablet hugged against her ribs.
Uncle Dominic slammed his heavy hand onto the granite table, making the glass carafes jump.
"Are you out of your mind, Luca?!" Dominic roared, his face flushed red. "You brought an auditor into a Level One council meeting?! While Adrian Mercer has eighty armed men sitting at the Queens border waiting for blood?!"
"Mind your tone, Dominic," Luca said, his voice dangerously soft. "You are speaking in my house."
"This house is about to be under siege!" Dominic spat, pointing a thick finger at Elena. "Mercer’s chief enforcer is lying on a stainless-steel table in the city morgue with his throat torn open! Mercer says she killed him! He’s offering a truce if we hand the girl over to face syndicate justice. Otherwise, he wipes out our dock concessions by dawn!"
"Shaw tried to kidnap her," Luca said flatly. "He tried to extort our master accounts."
"She’s an employee!" Dominic yelled, looking around the table at Paulie and Marco for support. "She’s a civilian accountant we hired to clean up corporate receipts! She isn't blood! She isn't family! You don't burn down a fifty-million-dollar waterfront deal and start a borough war for a girl who manages tax filings!"
Capo Paulie shifted uncomfortably in his seat, rubbing his scarred jaw. "Luca... Dominic has a point. Mercer is crazy right now. Shaw was his favorite guard dog. If we don't give him something to chew on, our shipping hubs in Brooklyn are going to be firebombed before the morning commute."
Elena stepped forward before Luca could answer.
The three men at the table blinked in surprise. In thirty years of family operations, no accountant had ever dared speak during a council meeting.
"Derek Shaw didn't go to the Hawthorne Gala to kill me for sport," Elena said, her voice crisp, clear, and devoid of fear. "He was sent there to retrieve the administrative bypass codes for the Valenti Development master treasury. Codes that would have allowed Mercer to siphon forty million dollars out of your legitimate construction funds in less than twelve hours."
Dominic sneered. "Shut your mouth, girl. The men are talking."
"Let her speak," Marco, the consigliere, murmured, leaning forward with narrow, sharp eyes.
Elena tapped her tablet screen and projected a encrypted file onto the central display wall of the boardroom.
"Three hours ago, Derek Shaw received a text message from a internal Valenti network router," Elena explained, pointing to the scrolling lines of blue code. "The message contained my exact location at the gala, the schedule of the coatroom attendant, and the security layout for the service elevators."
She looked directly at Dominic.
"The routing code used to transmit that message was V-3," Elena continued. "A code assigned exclusively to senior council members sitting in this room."
A suffocating silence fell over the boardroom.
Capo Paulie’s mouth opened slightly. Marco’s hand drifted toward his fountain pen, his eyes darting between Dominic and Luca.
Dominic’s face turned from red to an unhealthy shade of plum. "Are you accusing me, you little bitch?!"
Dominic reached inside his jacket.
Before his hand could clear his lapel, Luca moved with terrifying, instantaneous speed.
Luca reached across the table, grabbed Dominic by his silk tie, and slammed his head flat against the black granite surface with a sickening CRACK.
Glasses shattered. Water spilled across the mahogany trim.
Luca leaned over his uncle, pressing his heavy palm against the back of Dominic’s neck, pinning him to the table. He pulled a silver-plated SIG Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster and pressed the cold barrel directly behind Dominic’s left ear.
"If your hand touches iron, Uncle," Luca whispered into Dominic’s ear, "I will paint this granite with your brains before you can pull the trigger."
"Luca... Luca, wait!" Paulie screamed, scrambling backward in his chair.
"Look at me, Dominic," Luca commanded softly.
Luca lifted his uncle’s head just enough for Dominic to turn his bloody nose and look up into Luca’s pitch-black eyes.
"Elena Russo is under my personal blood oath," Luca said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls like a judgment from hell. "She built the legal empire that feeds your families, pays your lawyers, and keeps you out of federal prison. She is more Valenti than any traitor sitting at this table. Anyone who suggests handing her to Mercer—or anyone who looks at her with anything less than absolute respect—will be buried in an unmarked grave."
Luca released his grip and stepped back, adjusting his cuffs.

Dominic slumped in his chair, coughing and wiping blood from his broken nose with a trembling sleeve.
"Paulie. Marco," Luca said, putting his gun away. "Lock down the harbor terminals. Put thirty men on the Brooklyn perimeter. We are going to war with Mercer tonight. And when we are finished with Mercer, we are going to hunt down V-3."
