Chapter 6 - The War on Manhattan

By 10:00 AM the following morning, the sun attempted to pierce through the heavy gray clouds over Manhattan, casting a pale, cold light over a city on the brink of total gangland warfare.
Capo Dominic Valenti was dead. His body had been found in his car behind the 4th Street lounge, a single bullet through his heart, accompanied by a copy of his offshore Cayman bank statements pinned to his chest.
The news had sent shockwaves through the New York underworld.
Adrian Mercer, realizing his internal coup had failed and his primary informant was dead, went into total offensive mode.
By noon, two Valenti construction sites in Brooklyn had been targeted by firebombs. A drive-by shooting had shattered the front windows of Luca’s legitimate legal office on Madison Avenue. The NYPD was flooding the streets with riot vans, and federal agents were hovering around the harbor like vultures.
Inside the Valenti penthouse command suite, Luca sat at the head of a massive glass conference table surrounded by digital display boards.
Beside him sat Elena.
She had traded her navy suit for a sharp black dress, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail. She looked every bit the high-level corporate auditor—cool, calculating, and lethal behind a keyboard.
"Mercer thinks he can win this with bullets and panic," Elena said, pointing her stylus at a series of complex financial flowcharts projected on the glass wall. "He’s paying his hitmen two thousand dollars a day in cash, and he’s leasing armored vehicles through three front companies in New Jersey."
Luca leaned back in his chair, a glass of scotch in his hand. "Where is he getting the liquidity? I blocked his primary accounts three hours ago."
"He’s using an unregistered dark-web liquidity vault based out of Zurich," Elena revealed, zooming in on an encrypted routing protocol. "It holds forty-five million dollars in liquid capital. It’s his war chest. It pays for his weapons, his corrupt police contacts, and his safehouses."
"Can you touch it?" Marco, the consigliere, asked from across the table.
Elena smiled. It was a cold, brilliant, terrifying smile that made Marco sit up straight.
"Mercer made a fatal error," Elena explained. "He linked the administrative access of the Zurich vault to Derek Shaw’s master security token as a backup recovery key. And because I have Shaw’s phone and his biometrics..."
She clicked a single red button on her tablet.
On the main display wall, a stream of green financial balances began rapidly dropping to zero.
$-10,000,000... $-25,000,000... $-45,000,000...
"I just filed an emergency Suspicious Activity Report with the U.S. Treasury Department and triggered an international AML freeze through Zurich," Elena said smoothly. "Every dollar in Mercer’s war chest is currently locked under federal sequestration. In ten minutes, his credit lines will fail. In twenty minutes, his hired mercenaries won't be able to buy gas for their trucks."
Paulie, sitting near the door, let out a loud, astonished whistle. "Mother of God... she just broke Mercer’s spine with a mouse click."
Luca stared at Elena.
The pride shining in his dark eyes was so intense it made her heart skip a beat. He stood up, walked around the glass table, and stood beside her chair, resting his hand on her shoulder.
"You didn't just break his spine, Elena," Luca said softly. "You cornered a rabid dog."
Suddenly, Mateo burst into the command suite, his face pale, holding a satellite phone.
"Boss," Mateo gasped, his voice tight with dread. "We have a tactical breach on Transport Group Two."
Luca’s hand tightened on Elena’s shoulder. "What transport?"
"The secondary vehicle moving Caroline and Noah from Gramercy to the airport safehouse in upstate," Mateo said nervously. "Mercer’s men rammed the escort on the Brooklyn Bridge. They took Caroline."
May you like
Elena gasped, the stylus slipping from her fingers and clattering to the floor.
Mateo held up the satellite phone. "Mercer’s on line one. He wants to talk to you, Boss."
