Chapter 5 - The Hidden Record

The silence that hit the room was immediate, heavy, and suffocating.

Dr. Vance froze, his hand still resting on the control dial of the machine. The technician let go of Noah’s shoulders. Damian Caldwell turned around slowly, his eyes dark with sudden, dangerous fury.

Sophia stepped out from behind the ficus plants into the clear light of the sitting room.

Her apron was gone, her hair was slightly disheveled, and her heart was beating so hard she could feel it in her teeth. But she didn't look at Damian. She didn't look at Dr. Vance.

She looked at Noah.

The boy was shivering violently in the chair, his small fingers still hooked under the rubber seal of the right ear-cup, trying desperately to lift it away from his skull.

"What is the meaning of this?" Dr. Vance demanded, his smooth persona cracking into instant irritation. "Who let this servant in here?"

Damian took three long strides toward Sophia, stopping six inches from her. The air around him felt cold enough to freeze water.

"I gave you an explicit instruction three hours ago, Miss Bennett," Damian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register. "I told you to stay away from my son."

"He is in physical pain, Mr. Caldwell!" Sophia shouted, refusing to back down, refusing to lower her eyes. "That machine isn't training his brain! It’s creating a vacuum over an infected eardrum!"

Dr. Vance let out a loud, incredulous laugh. "An infected eardrum? Young woman, I am the Chief of Neurological Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins! I have reviewed this child’s medical charts for three years! He has been examined by top otolaryngologists!"

"Then they didn't look deep enough!" Sophia fired back, pointing a finger directly at the rubber ear-cup. "Look at him! He isn't fighting the left side! He’s only trying to lift the right cup! If it were a brainwave resistance issue, the sensory overload would affect both hemispheres equally! He is experiencing a mechanical pressure drop inside his right temporal bone!"

Damian froze.

His eyes flicked from Sophia’s furious face down to his son in the chair.

Noah was indeed pulling only on the right side of the helmet. His left arm hung limp at his side, completely unbothered by the left speaker.

Dr. Vance’s face flushed red. "Damian, this is absurd! She is a maid! She has no medical credentials! Allowing a housekeeper to interrupt a high-level neurological protocol is dangerous for Noah’s stability!"

"Take it off," Damian said softly.

Dr. Vance blinked. "What?"

"Take the helmet off him, Julian," Damian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet.

"Damian, if we break the cycle now—"

"I said take it off!" Damian roared, his voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings like a cannon shot.

The technician scrambled forward, hurriedly unbuckling the chin strap and lifting the heavy plastic helmet off Noah’s head.

The moment the seal broke, a soft pop sound was audible in the quiet room.

Noah collapsed sideways against the arm of the chair, gasping for air, tears finally streaming down his pale cheeks. He didn't look at his father. He didn't look at the doctor.

He reached his small, shaking hand out toward Sophia.

Sophia didn't care about rules anymore. She didn't care about Mrs. Patton, her paycheck, or the Rosewood invoice. She crossed the room, knelt beside the leather chair, and let Noah’s fingers wrap around her thumb.

Damian stood over them, his chest heaving, his eyes fixed on his son’s tiny hand gripping the maid’s thumb like a lifeline.

"Julian," Damian said, not looking at the doctor. "Leave the room."

"Damian, listen to reason—"

"Get out," Damian whispered. "All of you. Leave the equipment. Get out of my house."

Dr. Vance stared at the billionaire in disbelief, but seeing the dark, lethal promise in Damian’s eyes, he motioned to his assistant. They packed their briefcase in tense silence and hurried out of the room, closing the heavy doors behind them.

The room became silent again, save for the quiet sound of Noah’s breathing.

Damian walked over to the chair and dropped to one knee beside Sophia. For the first time, the billionaire looked completely stripped of his wealth, his armor, and his power.

"Why did he reach for you?" Damian asked softly, his voice trembling slightly as he looked at Sophia. "He hasn't reached for another human being since his mother died."

May you like

Sophia looked Damian in the eyes.

"Because I listened to him, Mr. Caldwell," she whispered. "Instead of listening to his diagnosis."
