Chapter 6 - Fire and Rain in the Nursery

Upstairs in the east wing, the storm sounded like an army pounding on the windows.

Emma Bennett sat on the edge of the plush armchair in the nursery, her arms wrapped around Lily, who was trembling against her chest. The power outage had plunged the room into darkness, save for the pale, sporadic flashes of lightning illuminating the rain-streaked glass.

“Mommy, what’s that loud noise?” Lily whispered, burying her face in Emma’s neck.

“It’s just thunder, sweetheart,” Emma lied, her own heart hammering so loudly she felt certain the intruders could hear it through the floorboards.

She remembered the brass key Alessandro had left on the kitchen table. It was safely tucked inside her pocket, but the silence outside the heavy oak nursery door felt fragile, like thin ice over a winter pond.

Boom.

A muffled explosion echoed from the ground floor, shaking the foundations of the mansion. The sound of splintering oak and shattering glass drifted up the grand staircase, followed by the sharp, rhythmic crack of automatic gunfire.

They were inside.

Emma’s breath hitched. She stood up, scooping Lily into her arms. She knew the protocol Alessandro had outlined, but waiting to be found felt like a slow death sentence. She needed to reach the private elevator in the east corridor—the one secured by the brass key.

She crept toward the nursery door, her hand trembling as she reached for the brass handle. She slowly turned it, pulling the door open an inch.

The hallway was shrouded in shadows, lit only by the crimson pulse of the emergency exit signs.

As Emma took a step out into the corridor, a sudden movement at the far end made her blood run cold.

A man in black tactical gear, his face obscured by a neoprene balaclava and night-vision goggles, emerged from the stairwell. He held a suppressed carbine leveled at the floor, scanning the hallway doors.

He turned his head. His visor locked directly onto Emma and Lily.

Emma’s breath caught in her throat. She froze, paralyzed by sheer terror.

The intruder raised his rifle, stepping forward. “Target sighted in the east wing—”

He didn't get to finish the sentence.

From the shadows above the stairwell landing, a dark figure dropped silently onto the carpet behind the operative. Before the man could pivot, a heavy, calloused forearm wrapped around his throat with bone-crushing force, dragging him backward into the alcove.

A dull crunch echoed down the hallway, and the intruder slumped limp to the floor.

Alessandro Moretti stepped out from the shadows, his HK416 raised, his face slick with rain and sweat. He looked like an angel of death carved from marble.

He spotted Emma and Lily cowering near the nursery door, and in an instant, the lethal predator melted away, replaced by the man who had promised to protect them.

“Get back inside,” Alessandro commanded sharply, his eyes darting down the hallway to check for reinforcements. “Now, Emma.”

Emma didn't hesitate. She scrambled backward into the nursery, pulling Lily with her. Alessandro followed them in, kicking the heavy oak door shut and throwing the deadbolt.

“Are you hurt?” Alessandro asked, dropping to one knee before them, his hands gently checking Lily’s arms to ensure she was unharmed.

“W-we’re fine,” Emma breathed, tears streaming down her face. “Mr. Moretti, there are too many of them—”

“They aren't getting past this room,” Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying certainty. He stood up, positioning himself directly in front of the nursery door, his rifle raised, waiting for the wolves to come to him.
