Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Outer Gate

Midnight brought a torrential downpour that lashed against the limestone walls of the Moretti estate like handfuls of gravel. Lightning fractured the dark sky over Westchester, illuminating the manicured lawns and the towering wrought-iron perimeter fence in stark, electric flashes.

At the main security gatehouse, two armed guards stood beneath the concrete overhang, their high-visibility rain gear glistening under the yellow floodlights.

“ Bloody miserable night,” muttered Miller, the senior guard, shifting his assault rifle strap across his chest. “Wish I was inside by the fireplace.”

“Check the perimeter monitors again,” replied Ramos, the younger guard, tapping his tablet. “The boss is on edge tonight. Miss Hale just got shipped out to Teterboro thirty minutes ago under heavy escort. Something big is coming down.”

Before Ramos could finish his sentence, the primary electrical grid feeding the estate’s outer perimeter flickered and died.

The brilliant halogen floodlights snapped off, plunging the sprawling driveway and the surrounding woods into absolute blackness. Emergency red reserve beacons blinked to life along the fence line, casting an eerie, hellish glow over the rain-slicked pavement.

“What the hell?” Miller muttered, stepping out of the guardhouse. “Generator failure?”

“No,” Ramos said sharply, his eyes fixed on the infrared thermal display on his tactical tablet. “Look at the tree line. Sector Four. We’ve got movement. Multiple signatures.”

Before they could raise their radios to sound the general alarm, a volley of suppressed gunfire ripped through the rain.

Pfft-pfft-pfft.

Ramos slumped against the console, a dark stain spreading across his chest. Miller instinctively dropped to one knee, bringing his rifle up, but a second sniper round shattered the glass of the guardhouse, grazing his shoulder and sending him sprawling to the concrete.

Out of the weeping willows bordering the estate, a dozen figures dressed head-to-toe in matte-black tactical gear surged past the disabled gate. They moved with terrifying military precision—the signature hallmark of the Volkov syndicate’s elite wet-work unit.

They weren't here to negotiate. They were here to wipe the Moretti estate clean.

Inside the mansion’s subterranean command center, Marco Rivera’s fingers flew across the console keyboards as warning klaxons began to wail in low, rhythmic pulses.

“Mr. Moretti!” Marco shouted into the comm-link connected to Alessandro’s private study. “Sector Four perimeter breached! Primary power cut! We have at least twelve armed hostiles moving up the main drive!”

Alessandro stood in the center of his study, calmly loading a spare magazine into a matte-black HK416 assault rifle. His expression was serene—the absolute calm of a man in his element.

“Activate the interior lockdown protocols,” Alessandro ordered, his voice steady. “Seal the residential wings. Keep the security team holding the grand foyer staircase. Do not let them reach the second floor.”

“Boss, they’ve got thermal breaching charges,” Marco warned. “They’ll blast through the front doors in under two minutes.”

“Let them try,” Alessandro said, racking the charging handle with a sharp, metallic clack. “I’ll be waiting in the foyer.”
