Chapter 5 - The Fractured Alliance

Ethan ran out into the parking lot just in time to see Vanessa throwing her designer luggage into the back of an Uber she had managed to summon using the last working credit card linked to her personal savings.

"Vanessa! Wait!" Ethan yelled, sprinting across the asphalt as the black sedan began to pull away. "Where are you going?!"

"I'm going to my mother's apartment in Manhattan!" Vanessa shouted through the partially rolled-down window, her face twisted in pure, venomous loathing. "I didn't marry a billionaire heir to live in a motel room with a broke loser! We are done, Ethan! Do you hear me? Done!"

The Uber accelerated down the drive, leaving Ethan standing alone in the middle of the country club parking lot under the glaring midday sun.

For the first time in his thirty-two pampered years, Ethan Mercer was entirely alone. No money. No wife. No home. No company.

He slumped against a concrete pillar, his phone buzzing in his hand. He looked down at the screen. It was an email notification from the bank regarding his personal checking account.

Current Balance: -$4,280.50 (Overdrawn).

A hysterical laugh bubbled up in his throat, instantly turning into a bitter, broken sob. He stumbled back to his car, climbed into the driver's seat, and stared at the steering wheel.

He remembered the night before. He remembered the sound of the glass shattering. He remembered his mother’s face—calm, unyielding, and silent—as blood dripped from her temple onto her blouse.

He had thought she was weak. He had thought her silence was submission.

Now, sitting in a car he couldn't afford to fuel, he realized the terrifying truth: his mother hadn't been defeated. She had simply given him enough rope to hang himself.

"Mom..." Ethan whispered into the empty car, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "...What have I done?"
