Chapter 2 - The Frozen Horizon

The morning sun crept over the manicured lawns of the Connecticut estate, casting long, golden shadows across the dew-kissed grass. Inside the main house, Ethan Mercer stretched lazily beneath Egyptian cotton sheets, his arm draped over Vanessa, who was already awake, scrolling through her phone.

"God, my head hurts from that champagne," Vanessa murmured, her voice laced with morning gravel. "Did your mother actually pack her things last night, or is she still lurking in that drafty cottage?"

Ethan chuckled, pulling her closer. "Knowing her, she spent the whole night whimpering in the dark. She’s completely dependent on us, Vanessa. Without my signature, she doesn't even have health insurance. By noon, she'll probably come crawling to the back door, begging for breakfast money."

"Good," Vanessa said, sitting up and tossing her long blonde hair over her shoulder. "Because my interior designer is coming by at two to measure the guest cottage. We're turning it into a yoga studio and a spa room. That old woman has cluttered the yard long enough."

Ethan smiled, feeling a surge of supreme, unearned satisfaction. He rolled out of bed, slipped into his silk robe, and walked down to the kitchen to brew his morning espresso. He tapped his high-end espresso machine, waiting for the hiss of steam, and casually picked up his custom platinum American Express card from the counter to check his morning notifications on his phone.

He unlocked his screen, opening the banking app.

The display spun in an endless digital loading loop.

Odd, Ethan thought, frowning. He closed the app and tried to open his corporate portfolio app—the one tracking his venture capital accounts and liquid funds.

ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT FROZEN PURSUANT TO MERCER TRUST MASTER CLAUSE 12-A.

Ethan’s breath hitched. He tapped another account—his primary personal checking.

ZERO BALANCE. HOLD PLACED BY FIDUCIARY TRUSTEE.

"What kind of glitch..." Ethan muttered, his stomach executing a violent, sickening freefall.

He dialed his private wealth manager, David Vance, directly. It rang twice before an automated voice clicked on: "This number is no longer accepting calls from this client ID. Please contact Mercer Family Legal Counsel."

"No, no, no," Ethan whispered, his hands beginning to shake. He opened his mobile browser and logged into the corporate portal of Mercer Holdings.

The screen flashed bright red.

CRITICAL NOTICE: EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY REVOKED. ALL ASSETS, REAL ESTATE HOLDINGS, AND SUBSIDIARY ACCOUNTS TRANSFERRED TO SOLE TRUSTEE ELENA MERCER.

The espresso machine behind him hissed loudly, venting scalding steam into the quiet kitchen, but Ethan didn't hear it. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. His chest tightened as the terrifying, cold realization slammed into him with the force of a freight train.

The trust wasn't imaginary.

The fortune hadn't vanished in bad investments.

It was real. All of it. And his mother held every single key.

"Ethan?" Vanessa called out from upstairs, her footsteps clicking sharply against the hardwood staircase. "Babe, why isn't the espresso ready? And my concierge card just declined at the boutique online! Did you forget to clear the monthly statement?"

Ethan stood frozen in the pristine kitchen, the platinum card slipping from his numb fingers and clattering onto the marble floor.
