Chapter 4 - The Country Club Collapse

By noon, Ethan and Vanessa found themselves sitting in the plush leather interior of their midnight-blue BMW X7 parked outside the gates of the exclusive Oakridge Country Club—the very club where Ethan’s father had served as president for a decade.
Ethan’s phone buzzed incessantly in the cup holder.
Declined. Declined. Transaction refused.
"Ethan, stop staring at your phone and do something!" Vanessa snapped, pacing back and forth on the gravel driveway outside the car, her designer heels sinking into the dirt. "Call your lawyer! Call someone! My father is going to kill when he hears we've been thrown out on the street like common thieves!"
"My lawyer won't take my calls, Vanessa!" Ethan shouted, slamming his hands against the steering wheel. "Nobody will! Martin Hale has a stranglehold on every legal firm in the tri-state area! Anyone who represents me is blacklisted from corporate finance for life!"
"Well, we can't just sit here!" she shrieked, opening the passenger door and sliding back into the seat. "Let's go to the club! We can get lunch, charge it to your member account, and use the executive lounge to figure this out. Marcus and Chad will be in there. They'll lend us some cash."
Desperate for any lifeline, Ethan put the car in gear and drove up to the club’s grand entrance. Valet attendants rushed out, but when Ethan tossed his keys, the senior attendant—a man Ethan had tipped hundreds of dollars over the years—looked at him with polite hesitation.
"Mr. Mercer... I'm afraid your club membership status has been suspended as of twenty minutes ago," the valet said, lowering his eyes awkwardly. "Management instructed us not to park vehicles for inactive accounts."
"Suspended?!" Ethan’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. "Do you know who I am?! My family built the East Wing of this clubhouse!"
"I'm just following orders, sir," the valet muttered, stepping back.
Humiliated, Ethan parked the car illegally in the fire lane, grabbed Vanessa’s hand, and marched straight through the double glass doors of the grand dining room.
The room was filled with local elites, hedge fund managers, and socialites sipping mimosas. At a center table sat Marcus Vance and Chad Sterling—two of Ethan’s closest "friends" and business associates whom Ethan had regularly lorded his wealth over.
"Ethan! My man!" Marcus called out, raising his glass with a smirk. "Heard you were hosting a private event at your estate today. Did your mother finally move out into a nursing home?"
A ripple of cruel laughter echoed around the table.
Ethan forced a rigid, brittle smile, walking up to their table. "Marcus, Chad. Listen, I need a massive favor. My primary liquidity accounts are undergoing a routine Mercer Trust audit—"
"Audit?" Chad interrupted, laughing loudly. "Ethan, cut the crap. Your corporate credit cards have been declined across the entire district. Word travels fast. The bank just liquidated your business line of credit an hour ago."
Ethan froze. "What are you talking about?"
Marcus leaned back in his chair, swirling his wine. "It means you're broke, Ethan. You're an empty suit. For three years, everyone knew you were living off your mother's estate like a spoiled parasite. Now that the tap is turned off, you're nobody."
"You son of a bitch—" Ethan snarled, lunging forward.
Before Ethan could grab Marcus's collar, two burly club security guards materialized on either side of him, grabbing his arms in a bruising grip.
"Mr. Mercer, you are trespassing on private club property," the head security guard said coldly. "Leave now, or we'll call the county jail."

Vanessa covered her mouth, her eyes wide with sheer horror as every eye in the dining room turned to stare at them. The whispering began—sharp, venomous, and merciless.
Without a word, Vanessa turned on her heel and bolted out the double doors, leaving Ethan alone in the center of the room, held down by security guards like a common criminal.
