Chapter 7 - Nightfall at the Bio-Facility

The timber yard was dead silent, save for the howling wind whistling through rusted metal sheds and towering stacks of rotted pine logs.
A heavy, freezing mist hung low over the ground, illuminated only by the harsh high-beam headlights of an idling black Mercedes SUV parked in the center of the muddy clearing.
I sat alone in the driver’s seat of my SUV, my hands resting lightly on the steering wheel. Beneath my heavy winter coat, the tactical recording pin was clipped securely to my collar, broadcasting every word directly back to Detective Ross’s tactical monitoring van hidden half a mile down the access road.
The door of the Mercedes opened, and Julian Vance stepped out into the mist, followed by two armed guards holding Sarah by the arms.
My sister looked exhausted. Her hair was tangled, her face pale, and dark bruises bloomed around her wrists where the zip-ties or handcuffs had held her.
Vance walked slowly toward my driver’s side window, his breath pluming in the freezing air like white smoke. He tapped a gloved knuckle against the glass.
I rolled the window down halfway.
“You love playing hero, don't you, Ms. Reynolds?” Vance sneered, his gray eyes gleaming with cold triumph. “You brought the file?”
I held up a small, encrypted USB thumb drive between my fingers. “I brought it. But I want to see my sister in my car first.”
Vance chuckled—a dry, humorless sound. “You’re not in a position to negotiate terms, Maya. Toss the drive out the window, or watch your sister take a very long, very permanent trip down into our mountain facility.”
He signaled to one of the guards, who shoved Sarah forward onto her knees in the mud. Sarah let out a soft, choked cry.
“Now!” I shouted into the secret com-link hidden in my collar.
In a fraction of a second, the dark perimeter of the timber yard erupted into blinding white light.
BANG! FLASH-BANG!
Flashbang grenades detonated simultaneously across the tree line, filling the night air with deafening concussive roars and blinding magnesium flashes. Tactical vehicles smashed through the rotting wooden fences with sirens wailing and red-and-blue lights strobing against the pine trees.
“Federal Agents! Nobody move!”
Panic instantly shattered the cold corporate composure of Julian Vance’s operation. His armed guards scrambled for their sidearms, but federal marshals and state tactical troopers swarmed out of the mist from all directions, tackling them into the mud before they could even clear their holsters.
Vance spun around, lunging for the door of the Mercedes to make a desperate escape.
I didn't hesitate. I shoved my car door open, sprang out of the SUV, and sprinted across the muddy clearing. Before Vance could pull the door handle, I tackled him hard from behind, sending both of us crashing face-first into the wet earth.
Vance thrashed like a trapped animal, trying to throw me off, but years of keeping up with my energetic daughters and staying sharp gave me the adrenaline surge I needed. I pinned his arm behind his back just as two state troopers rushed up, slamming steel handcuffs onto his wrists and hauling him to his feet.
“You’re finished, Vance,” I panted, wiping mud from my forehead as I stood up.
Vance spat a mouthful of dirt onto the ground, glaring at me with venomous hatred as the troopers shoved him into the back of a cruiser.
A few yards away, Detective Ross was kneeling in the mud, cutting the zip-ties off Sarah’s wrists with a pair of tactical shears.
I walked over slowly, looking down at my sister.
Sarah burst into wracking, uncontrollable sobs, burying her face in her hands. “Maya... I’m so sorry... I was so stupid... I thought we were just making quick money... I never meant for anyone to hurt Lily...”

I didn't yell at her. I didn't lecture her. I simply reached down, pulled my weeping sister to her feet, and wrapped my arms tightly around her trembling shoulders.
The nightmare was finally over. The monsters in the shadows had been dragged out into the blazing light.
