Chapter 5 - The Shadow Network

By 3:30 PM, the examination room had transformed into a temporary federal and state investigative hub.
Two state troopers stood guard outside the door, while a tired, rugged-looking detective named Ross sat across from Dr. Alistair and me at the rolling medical desk. Emma and Lily were resting in an adjoining private recovery room, sipping hot cocoa under the care of a pediatric counselor.
Detective Ross flipped open a leather notebook, running a hand over his stubbled jaw as he reviewed the medical documentation Dr. Alistair had printed out.
“Apex Life Sciences,” Detective Ross muttered, shaking his head. “We’ve been hearing whispers about them for six months. They’re a front company registered in Delaware, but their real lab facilities are buried deep inside an old Cold War-era underground bunker network up in the foothills outside Boulder. They target families drowning in massive medical or gambling debt, offering massive cash payouts in exchange for ‘minor genetic tissue samples’ from children under the age of eight.”
“My sister,” I said, my voice heavy with grief and fury. “She got mixed up in crypto trading and high-interest loans last year. They must have trapped her.”
“They trap hundreds of parents,” Ross replied grimly. “They use ironclad, coerced non-disclosure agreements and private arbitration clauses that make it nearly impossible for local authorities to intervene—unless we catch them red-handed with active medical extraction on a minor without state medical board oversight. Which, thanks to you bringing Lily in today, we officially have.”
He looked up, meeting my eyes with a steely expression.
“Your sister is currently being held at an undisclosed corporate facility or moving toward their primary mountain lab,” Ross said. “Vance won't let her talk, and he certainly won't let Lily remain in state custody if he thinks she can compromise their upcoming FDA trials for their synthetic cellular regeneration project.”
“What do we do?” I asked, leaning forward. “How do we get Sarah back, and how do we shut them down?”
Ross pulled a small flash drive from his pocket and slid it across the table.
“We use bait,” Ross said softly. “Apex thinks they silenced you with intimidation. But they don't know that Dr. Alistair managed to extract a complete digital log of the genetic payload from Lily’s incision site before Vance’s men arrived. That file is worth billions to them—and they know you have it.”

“You want to use me as bait?” I asked.
“I want to dismantle an international black-market biotech ring before they pack up their underground labs and vanish into thin air,” Ross corrected. “And I need your help to do it.”
