Chapter 4 - The Visitor in the Waiting Room

“Get away from my daughter!” Sarah shrieked, shoving past the security guards and lunging into the room.
She threw herself toward the examination table, grabbing Lily and pulling the child into a frantic, suffocating hug. Lily whimpered, pressing her face into Sarah’s shoulder, though her small body remained tense and rigid.
Dr. Alistair stepped directly between Sarah and the door, his hand resting firmly on the telephone console.
“Ma’am, you need to step back,” Dr. Alistair ordered, his voice cold and commanding. “This is a restricted medical examination room. Hospital security has already been notified, and mandatory child protection protocols are currently in motion.”
The man in the charcoal suit stepped forward. He had slicked-back dark hair, cold gray eyes, and a terrifyingly calm, corporate smile that didn't reach his eyes. He reached inside his jacket, pulled out a gold-embossed leather badge case, and flashed it briefly.
“Dr. Alistair, I am Agent Vance with Apex Life Sciences compliance and legal oversight,” the man said smoothly, his voice polished like glass. “We are aware of the minor medical irregularity discovered during this routine checkup. It was part of an approved, voluntary familial clinical study authorized by the child’s legal guardian—Mrs. Sarah Miller.”
He turned his cold, calculating gaze toward me.
“And you must be Maya,” Vance said, stepping closer with slow, deliberate strides. “An interfering busybody who loves to stick her nose into private family contracts. You’re holding property and a minor child that belong under the care of her legal guardian. Hand the child over to her mother right now, and we can all walk out of here without involving local law enforcement in a very messy, very expensive legal battle.”
I stood up from my chair, towering over the small gap between the examination table and the counter. The fear I had felt in the car had completely evaporated, replaced by a roaring fire in my veins.
“You call illegal tissue harvesting on a six-year-old child a voluntary familial clinical study?” I spat out, taking a step toward him. “My sister is a broke, desperate addict who was manipulated by corporate predators like you! That man—” I pointed a shaking finger at Vance “—is part of an illegal black-market ring. Dr. Alistair, do not let them leave this room! Call the state police right now!”
Dr. Alistair didn't hesitate. He slammed his hand down on the desk intercom button. “Code Silver, Pediatric Trauma Suite 4. Requesting hospital security and local police dispatch immediately.”
Vance’s polished smile vanished instantly. His gray eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits.
“You have no idea what forces you’re messing with, Ms. Reynolds,” Vance hissed, stepping close enough that I could smell the expensive cologne masking the cold sweat of panic. “Apex Life Sciences operates at the highest levels of government biotechnology. That little girl’s genetic markers hold the key to a multi-billion-dollar therapeutic patent. Her mother signed the binding financial contracts. You cannot protect her forever.”
“Watch me,” I said, stepping directly into his personal space, refusing to flinch.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway outside. Shouting voices bounced off the linoleum floor.
“State Police! Open this door!”
Vance’s private security guards exchanged a panicked glance. Vance clenched his jaw, realizing the window for a quiet, corporate extraction had slammed shut.
“This isn't over, Maya,” Vance whispered, his voice like venom slipping across my skin. He turned on his heel, grabbed Sarah by the arm with bruising force, and yanked her toward the door.
“Sarah! Don't go with him!” I yelled, reaching out to grab my sister’s hand.

Sarah looked back at me over her shoulder, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. She didn't fight the security guards. She just whispered three words before disappearing into the hallway chaos:
“I’m so sorry.”
