Chapter 7 - The Social War

The Bennett family did not go quietly.
True to his narcissistic nature, Robert Bennett couldn't accept defeat. The next morning, a statement was leaked to a prominent California lifestyle and business blog.
The headline read: Napa Drama: Local CEO Claims Daughter and Wealthy Husband Executed Hostile Corporate Takeover of Family Legacy.
In the article, my father framed himself as a devoted patriarch who had been blindsided by a "cold and calculating" daughter who used her wedding as a public spectacle to ruin his reputation. Attached to the article was a statement from Madison, claiming she had been "financially stranded abroad due to a coordinated cyber-attack on her brand’s accounts."
When I read the article on my phone over breakfast, I didn't panic.
Neither did Ethan.
"They're playing 1990s PR games in a digital era," Ethan said calmly, taking a bite of his toast. "They think public opinion is bought through tabloid favors. They don't realize that people love receipts."
At 10:00 AM, Ethan’s legal team released a public, unedited Google Drive link directly beneath the news article's comment section.
The link contained:
The official forensic accounting report detailing the $2.5 million forged wire transfers.
The high-definition video of Ethan’s speech at the wedding, including the empty seats.
Audio recordings of my father’s voicemail from three months prior, where he explicitly threatened to boycott my wedding unless I surrendered my trust fund control.
The Bali resort's official police report showing Madison was detained for unpaid bills totaling $18,450.
Within two hours, the internet did what the internet does best.
The story went viral across TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook. The hashtag #JusticeForClaire began trending nationwide.
Lifestyle influencers who had previously partnered with Madison’s brand posted public video resignations, dropping her immediately. Commenters flooded my father’s company Facebook page, posting screenshots of his forged wire transfers until his web team had to take the entire corporate website offline.
By late afternoon, the original news blog retracted my father’s statement, posting a public apology and publishing a full expose on the Bennett family’s financial collapse.
My phone rang. It was my uncle Thomas.
"Claire," Uncle Thomas said, his voice brimming with satisfaction. "I just got off the phone with the board of directors for the family manufacturing firm."
"What happened, Uncle Thomas?"
"We held an emergency vote," Thomas replied. "Based on the evidence released today, Robert has been officially removed as Chief Executive Officer. His voting shares have been suspended pending the criminal investigation."
I leaned back against the kitchen counter, closing my eyes.
"Is he gone?"
"He was escorted out of the building by security twenty minutes ago," Thomas said softly. "Claire... I’m sorry I didn't step in years ago. We all saw how he treated you, but we were too afraid of his temper. You did what none of us had the courage to do."

"Thank you, Uncle Thomas," I whispered.
"No, Claire," Thomas said gently. "Thank you for finally turning off the lights on his circus."
