Chapter 3 - The Morning After

The sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of our suite at the Napa resort, warm and golden. I woke up wrapped in the soft white duvet, the heavy weight of my diamond wedding band resting comfortably on my left hand.

Beside me, Ethan was already awake, sitting propped against the plush pillows with his laptop resting on his knees. The quiet tap-tap-tap of his keys was the only sound in the room.

"Good morning, Mrs. Cole," he murmured softly, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my forehead.

"Did last night really happen?" I asked, my voice raspy from sleep. "Or did I dream that you dismantled my entire family over a salmon dinner?"

Ethan gave a low, quiet laugh, setting the laptop on the nightstand. "It happened, Claire. Every word of it. And if you’re angry at me for blowing up the secret at the reception, I—"

"I’m not angry," I interrupted, sitting up and pulling the sheet to my chest. "Ethan... how long have you known about Nana Evelyn’s trust?"

Ethan’s expression sobered. He reached for my hand, interlocking his fingers with mine.

"Four months ago, your father approached my investment firm," Ethan explained quietly. "He didn't know I had full access to the regional forensic auditing logs. He tried to use your grandmother’s land titles in Sonoma as collateral for a private loan to cover Madison’s business debts. When I ran the title search, I discovered that Nana Evelyn had left seventy percent of that property strictly to you upon your thirty-first birthday."

My jaw dropped. "My thirty-first birthday was two weeks ago."

"Exactly," Ethan said. "Your father knew that the moment you got married and turned thirty-one, the trust would automatically transfer into your name, completely out of his reach. He needed you to stay submissive. He needed you to sign a power-of-attorney extension before the wedding. When you refused to move your wedding date, he realized he couldn't control you anymore. So he tried to execute a quiet wire transfer yesterday morning before the banks closed for the weekend."

"And you stopped it?"

"My legal team filed an emergency injunction at eight o'clock yesterday morning," Ethan said smoothly. "By noon, every single one of Robert Bennett’s corporate and personal accounts was frozen pending a judicial audit. By four o'clock, when you were getting into your wedding dress, your father realized he wasn't just losing control over you—he was broke."

Before I could digest the weight of his words, my phone on the nightstand began to buzz incessantly.

I looked at the screen.

14 Missed Calls: Dad. 22 Missed Calls: Mom. 8 Missed Calls: Madison. 36 Unread Text Messages.

I picked up the phone. The top text message from my father was sent at 2:15 AM:

[Dad]: You and that arrogant bastard have destroyed this family. You think you’re clever, Claire? You have ruined your sister's life. Pick up the damn phone before I involve our lawyers.

A second text from my mother, sent ten minutes later:

[Mom]: How could you let Ethan humiliate us like that in front of everyone? Your father is sick with worry! Madison is crying in Bali! You owe your father an apology!

I stared at the screen, reading the texts twice. There was no ask about how the wedding went. No inquiry about my happiness. No remorse. Even faced with criminal exposure, their primary concern was still their pride, Madison's tears, and my perceived disobedience.

I slowly looked up at Ethan. "They haven't changed at all."

"They never will, Claire," Ethan said softly. "People who use you as a scapegoat don't get angry because you hurt them. They get angry because you stopped letting them bleed you dry."

I tapped the screen, opened my father’s contact card, and hit Block. I did the same for my mother.

"What about Madison?" Ethan asked, watching me carefully.

"Oh, Madison is about to experience the real world for the first time," I said, a small, cold smile forming on my lips. "Does she know her credit cards were frozen yesterday?"

Ethan smirked, picking up his phone. "She’s probably finding out right about now."
