Chapter 10 - Justice in Full Bloom

Three months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over downtown Chicago, warming the stone facade of a magnificent historic commercial building overlooking the river.
On the top-floor executive terrace, Grandma Rosalyn sat at a wrought-iron table, sipping hot tea and looking out over the city skyline she had secretly owned a major stake in for decades.
Her legal battles were over. Patrick and Joanne were currently facing federal trial for wire fraud, elder abuse, and grand larceny, sitting in a county holding facility with bail set way beyond anything they could ever dream of paying. Their friends had abandoned them, their social circle had vanished, and their luxurious lifestyle was nothing more than a fading memory.
As for the ten-million-dollar estate?
It was fully restored under a new, unbreakable family trust—managed jointly by Grandma and me, dedicated to funding elder abuse advocacy and architectural preservation grants across the Midwest.
Grandma turned her head, smiling warmly as I walked out onto the terrace carrying a fresh plate of pastries.
“You know, Audrey,” Grandma said softly, her eyes twinkling with life and humor, “that basement was awfully cold. But looking back... it was worth it just to see the look on Patrick’s face when the key turned on him for a change.”

I laughed, sitting down across from her and handing her a warm blueberry scone.
“Some locks, Grandma,” I smiled, looking out over the shining city, “are just waiting for the right person to hold the key.”
