Chapter 10 - Blood and Bond

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden light across the nursery of my home.

Mark was facing twenty years in federal prison for child trafficking, forgery, and grand larceny. Richard Montgomery’s empire had collapsed overnight under the weight of federal indictments. The surrogate baby from the clinic had been safely placed with a loving, vetted foster family through state services.

I sat in the rocking chair, cradling my true daughter close to my chest. She was softly nursing, her tiny fingers curling around my thumb.

The nursery door opened quietly.

Max stepped into the room, holding his stuffed rabbit. He walked slowly over to the rocking chair, his big brown eyes filled with hesitant hope.

"Mommy?" Max whispered softly.

"Come here, sweetie," I said, reaching out my arm.

Max climbed onto the footstool beside me. He looked down at the baby girl resting in my lap.

He leaned closer, pulled back the edge of her pink floral blanket, and looked at her left foot.

There, resting clearly on her heel, was the tiny strawberry mark.

Max’s face lit up with the purest, most radiant smile I had ever seen. Tears filled his eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure joy.

He gently reached out his small hand and patted the baby's soft dark hair.

"Hi, little sister," Max whispered softly, pressing a gentle kiss against her forehead. "I told you I’d help Mommy find you. I'm your big brother, and I'm going to protect you forever."

My daughter opened her dark, clear eyes, looked up at her big brother, and let out a soft, sweet sigh of absolute safety.

The silence had ended. Our family was finally whole.
