Chapter 9 - The Takedown

"Get out of my house before I have you shot!" Richard Montgomery roared, reaching for a wall intercom button.

"Press that button, Richard," David said calmly, pulling up his tablet screen, "and this live-stream broadcast goes from forty thousand local news viewers directly to the FBI Financial Crimes Division."

Richard froze, his hand hovering over the intercom.

"We have the DNA reports," I said, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the nursery. "We have the audio recording of my husband admitting you paid him $3 million to swap my child for a brain-dead infant. We have the financial wire logs from Montgomery Global."

Evelyn Montgomery looked at her husband, her face turning as white as her silk robe. "Richard... what is she talking about? You told me this was a private surrogacy adoption!"

"Shut up, Evelyn!" Richard snapped.

"She didn't know," I realized, looking into Evelyn’s shocked eyes. "You lied to your own wife, Richard. You bought my daughter from my husband to save your corporate merger because your own baby died."

Evelyn looked down at the baby in her arms, then at me—a mother drenched in rain, eyes burning with a fierce, dangerous love that money could never buy.

"Is this true, Richard?" Evelyn whispered, tears flooding her eyes. "Did you steal this woman's baby?"

Before Richard could answer, red and blue emergency lights flashed through the tall glass windows of the nursery. Heavy sirens wailed in the driveway as six state police cruisers and two federal vans pulled up to the main entrance.

David had released the GPS location and evidence packet to the State Police thirty minutes ago.

The heavy oak doors of the nursery were thrown open. Uniformed officers and federal agents flooded the room with weapons drawn.

"FBI! Hands where we can see them!" the lead agent barked.

Richard Montgomery was slammed against his gold-leafed wall, his wrists forced into heavy steel handcuffs. The doctor dropped his clipboard, trembling as an officer secured him.

I walked straight up to Evelyn Montgomery.

She looked at me, weeping softly, and gently laid my biological daughter into my waiting arms.
