Chapter 6 - The Public Exposure

The morning news cycle was usually dominated by stock market updates, political gossip, and local real estate developments. But by 10:00 AM, all regular programming was interrupted across every major network and digital news outlet in the state.
BREAKING: HIGH-SOCIETY SCANDAL — ROBLES FAMILY EMPIRE COLLAPSES AMID FEDERAL FRAUD AND EXTORTION PROBES.
Footage flashed across the screen showing federal marshals escorting Carmen Robles out of her sprawling estate in handcuffs, her face covered by an oversized designer scarf as flashbulbs blinded her from every angle. Simultaneously, another camera crew captured Javier Robles being led out of a downtown holding facility in an orange jumpsuit, his head bowed low in utter humiliation.
Social media exploded instantly.
The wedding photos—which had been featured in glossy society magazines just twenty-four hours earlier—were instantly replaced by leaked police reports, audio transcripts of Carmen’s demands for the condo, and confirmation of the physical assault that had sent a bride to the emergency room on her wedding night.
In a matter of hours, the Robles family name went from being a symbol of untouchable high-society prestige to a universal punchline and a toxic liability. Country club memberships were revoked before lunch. Charity boards scrubbed Carmen’s name from their donor plaques by afternoon tea. Their so-called friends—people who had fawned over them at the reception just two nights prior—pretended they had never even met them.
Sitting in a private recovery suite at Alexander’s medical facility, Sofia watched the live broadcast on a wall-mounted television screen.
The anchor was interviewing an investigative journalist who was detailing the fraudulent financial schemes uncovered by Alexander’s forensic team.
"It appears the Robles family fortune was built entirely on a house of cards," the anchor reported. "Federal prosecutors state that millions in municipal funds were systematically diverted through shell companies controlled by Carmen Robles and her son Javier..."
Sofia turned off the TV with the remote control, the screen fading to black. She let out a long, shuddering sigh.
"They cared so much about status, money, and control," Sofia murmured, shaking her head. "They were willing to destroy my life just to add another property to their portfolio."
"Greed is a disease, baby girl," Alexander said softly, walking into the room carrying a tray of fresh fruit and toast. "And people like that always assume everyone else is as weak as they are. They forgot that some families play by a completely different set of rules."

I sat across from her, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "Your father made sure they will never be able to hurt you, or anyone else, ever again."
Sofia looked between the two of us—her mother, who had sheltered her through the darkest hours of her life, and her father, who had mobilized an entire empire of power and justice at a single word. For the first time in ten years, the divide between our past family fractures completely healed.
