Chapter 4 - The House Call

The Robles estate sat behind towering wrought-iron gates in one of the city’s most exclusive gated enclaves. Manicured boxwood hedges, sparkling fountains, and sprawling neoclassical architecture screamed old money and untouchable privilege.

Carmen Robles was sitting in her private study, sipping a cup of chamomile tea and reviewing her social calendar for the upcoming charity gala, when the heavy oak front doors of her mansion were blown off their hydraulic hinges with a concussive blast that rattled every window in the house.

Carmen leapt to her feet, dropping her teacup. It shattered against the imported marble floor, staining the white stone dark brown.

"What in God's name—?!" she gasped.

Footsteps—heavy, rhythmic, and relentless—marched down the grand hallway.

Before Carmen could reach her desk phone, the study doors swung open wide. Two burly men in plainclothes stood guard at the threshold, and stepping past them was a man whose presence commanded immediate, terrified submission.

Alexander Brooks.

Carmen’s breath caught in her throat. She had never met him in person, but she knew his reputation. For years, she had warned Javier never to cross paths with the retired colonel, believing the rumors that Alexander had quietly retired to a secluded life after his divorce.

"Colonel Brooks," Carmen recovered quickly, smoothing down her designer silk blouse, attempting to cloak her rising panic in upper-class arrogance. "You are trespassing on private property. How dare you break into my home? I will have you arrested within the hour—"

"You won't be calling anyone, Carmen," Alexander interrupted smoothly, walking across the room and pulling out a chair directly opposite her desk. He sat down without an invitation, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the mahogany surface.

"Where is my son?!" Carmen demanded, her voice rising an octave. "Where is Javier? He hasn't answered his phone all night!"

"Your son is currently experiencing a very educational seminar on the difference between bullying a defenseless girl and facing a consequence," Alexander said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

Carmen’s face flushed red with fury. "That little ungrateful b—"

Before she could finish the word, Alexander’s hand slammed flat against the mahogany desk with a force like a gunshot. The sound echoed through the mansion like thunder.

Carmen flinched violently, falling back into her leather chair.

"If you ever use that kind of language regarding my daughter again," Alexander said, every word dripping with a lethal, controlled promise, "I won't just destroy your social standing. I will dismantle everything your family has built down to the last brick and salt the earth beneath it."

"You think you can threaten me?!" Carmen shrieked, her mask of composure completely shattering. "We have judges in our pocket! We have city councilmen dining at our table! Your daughter married into our family, and she belongs to us!"

"She belonged to no one except herself," Alexander replied coldly. He reached into his jacket pocket and tossed a thick manila folder onto the desk.

Carmen looked down at the folder. Emblazoned across the cover was the official seal of the federal securities and exchange commission, alongside several private forensic accounting audits.

"What is this?" she whispered, her fingers trembling as she opened it.

"That," Alexander said, standing up slowly, "is a complete record of your family's financial portfolio. Every shell company you used to hide embezzled municipal funds, every fraudulent real estate transfer, and every tax evasion scheme your late husband set up twenty years ago."

Carmen’s eyes scanned the pages, and the blood drained entirely from her face until she looked like a corpse.

"You... you investigated us?"

"I didn't have to," Alexander said, walking toward the door. "Your son brags too much when he drinks at private clubs. My intelligence team merely connected the dots. By 9:00 AM tomorrow, those files will be sitting on the desk of every federal prosecutor in the state."

"Wait!" Carmen cried out, stumbling around her desk, her arrogance completely replaced by whimpering terror. "Colonel—please! We can talk about this! It was just a misunderstanding about the condo! We didn't mean to—"

Alexander didn't look back. He stepped out of the study, leaving Carmen alone in her crumbling mansion, staring at the papers that spelled out her absolute ruin.
