Chapter 8 - The Ashes of the Past

Late that afternoon, a sleek silver sedan pulled up to a quiet, tree-lined cemetery overlooking the Charles River.
Snow had begun to fall lightly, dusting the green grass and polished granite headstones in white.
Martha walked slowly up the gentle hill, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies. Damian walked beside her, holding a black umbrella over her head to keep the snow off her dark wool coat.
They stopped in front of a clean, granite headstone.
ANDREW BELLINI BELOVED BROTHER AND FAITHFUL FRIEND ALWAYS GUIDED BY TRUTH
Martha knelt in the quiet snow, placing the lilies gently at the base of the stone.
“Hey, Andrew,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “It’s over. Everyone knows the truth now. You’re not remembered as a criminal or a victim. You’re remembered as a hero.”
Damian knelt beside her, placing his heavy hand on the stone.
“I kept my promise, Andrew,” Damian said softly, his deep voice carrying across the quiet cemetery. “I protected her. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure no harm ever comes to her again.”
Martha looked at Damian, tears glistening in her eyes like diamonds.
The lingering grief that had weighed down her heart for three agonizing months finally seemed to lift, carried away by the cold December wind. Her brother wasn't just gone—he was at peace. And in his passing, he had led her to the one man in the world who truly understood her strength.
Damian stood up and helped Martha to her feet. He pulled her gently against his chest, wrapping his heavy wool coat around her to shield her from the cold.
Martha rested her cheek against his lapel, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart.
“What happens now, Damian Falcone?” she asked softly.
Damian lifted her chin with his finger, forcing her to look into his dark gray eyes. There was no coldness left in them now—only a deep, burning devotion.
“Now,” Damian said softly, “we live. Without secrets. Without lies.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small silver lighter Andrew had left behind.
Damian opened the cap, sparked the wheel, and held the small flame between them for a moment. Then, with a gentle breath, he blew it out.
“The past is gone,” Damian murmured. “All I care about now... is our future.”

He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.
The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with a fierce passion that made Martha’s toes curl inside her boots. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, letting the warmth of his love consume every remaining shadow in her soul.
