Chapter 8 - Blood on the Marble

The hallway outside the master suite was a war zone.
Through the cracked digital monitor on the panic room's interior control panel, I watched the security feeds with my heart in my throat, holding a sleeping Leo tightly against my chest.
The smoke from the eastern wing had drifted up the grand staircase, turning the opulent marble corridors into a hazy, fog-filled battlefield. Three of Lorenzo’s enforcers were pinned behind a marble pillar, exchanging suppressive fire with a squad of masked mercenaries advancing from the east wing.
Suddenly, Lorenzo appeared from the shadows behind the enemy strike team.
He moved with terrifying, predatory silence. Before the trailing mercenary realized he was flanked, Lorenzo’s combat knife flashed in the dim red emergency light. In less than ten seconds, three more mercenaries dropped silently to the floor, neutralized without a single unnecessary shot fired.
The remaining attackers panicked, shouting in scrambled tactical codes over their radios, realizing their flank had been completely collapsed.
"Boss! We’ve got movement at the southern staircase!" Marcus’s voice cut through the comms. "It’s Moretti’s personal hit squad! They’re trying to breach the ground floor command center!"
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He pivoted sharply on his heel, sprinting down the grand hallway toward the southern stairs, his submachine gun raised, firing with ruthless, pinpoint accuracy. Every shot was calculated, every movement a masterclass in urban warfare.
For the next ten minutes, the mansion echoed with the deafening symphony of gunfire, shattering glass, and shouting men.
Then, abruptly, the shooting stopped.
Silence descended on the estate once again, broken only by the crackle of a small fire burning in the eastern courtyard and the low hum of the emergency ventilation system clearing the smoke.
I held my breath, staring at the monitor, praying to see Lorenzo walk back down the hall.
A shadow crossed the lens of the security camera outside the panic room.
The heavy steel door beeped.
My muscles locked. Had the mercenaries broken through? Did they get past Lorenzo?
Then the passcode was entered correctly: 6-7-4-2-9-1.
The hydraulic bolts retracted with a sharp clack, and the heavy steel door slid open.
Lorenzo stood in the doorway.
His tactical vest was smoking slightly, a shallow graze marked his left shoulder with a dark crimson smear of blood, and his dark hair was slightly disheveled. But his eyes were clear, steady, and blazing with absolute victory.
He dropped his empty rifle onto the carpet, walking slowly into the panic room.
"Are you... are you hurt?" I gasped, rushing forward, my hands hovering anxiously over his bleeding shoulder.
"It's just a scratch," Lorenzo muttered, his voice raspy. He reached out, gently taking Leo from my arms, holding his son close to his heart as if confirming with his own senses that they were both safe.
"The assault is over," Lorenzo breathed, closing his eyes for a brief second of profound relief. "Moretti’s strike team has been completely eliminated. Marcus is sweeping the lower levels now."
I let out a ragged breath, tears spilling over my eyelashes and tracking down my cheeks. "You're bleeding. Let me help you—"
Before I could finish, Lorenzo dropped to one knee, looking up at me with an intensity that made the entire world outside this room vanish into thin air.
"Clara," he said, his voice deep, raw, and completely unfiltered.
"Y-yes?" I whispered, my heart hammering.
"When the first bomb went off tonight," Lorenzo confessed, his dark eyes locked onto mine, "my only thought wasn't about my empire, my money, or my safety. My only thought was that I couldn't bear the thought of never seeing you again."
I stared down at him, the walls I had built around my broken heart crumbling into dust.
May you like
"Lorenzo..."
He stood up slowly, closing the space between us until I could feel the heat radiating off his body, until his lips brushed gently against my forehead, then tracing down to my cheek, before capturing my lips in a deep, fierce, unyielding kiss that tasted of smoke, survival, and absolute devotion.
