Chapter 7 - Breach at Midnight

The floor shook violently beneath our feet as a second, heavier blast echoed from the eastern wing of the estate.

Lorenzo’s paternal tenderness vanished in a microsecond, replaced instantly by the lethal, hyper-focused instincts of a mafia warlord. Without a single word of hesitation, he scooped Leo into one arm, grabbed my wrist with his free hand, and pulled me toward the reinforced panic room built directly into the master suite wall.

"Stay behind me!" Lorenzo commanded, his voice ringing out over the screeching alarms.

He punched a rapid six-digit passcode into the digital keypad beside the bookshelf, and the heavy steel wall slid open with a hydraulic hiss. Pushing us inside, Lorenzo slammed the emergency lockdown button on the interior console.

Clang-clang-clang.

Three massive steel bolts locked into place, sealing the reinforced chamber hermetically against any outside threat.

"Marcus!" Lorenzo shouted into his wrist communicator, his voice sharp and absolute. "Report! What just hit the eastern perimeter?"

For five agonizing seconds, there was only static on the line. Then Marcus's breathless, frantic voice crackled back through the earpiece.

"Boss! It’s a coordinated tactical assault! A reinforced truck rigged with C4 blew through the secondary gate on the eastern ridge! We’ve got at least twenty heavily armed mercenaries wearing thermal camouflage pushing through the gardens! They’re bypassing the standard security checkpoints—they have insider access codes!"

Lorenzo’s face turned to carved stone. "Insider access codes? Only three people outside of myself have those codes."

"And two of them are dead or locked in the dungeons," Marcus replied grimly. "Which means there’s another high-level mole inside our command network. They’re gunning straight for the master suite wing, Boss. They know you and the baby are inside."

I clutched my chest, the terror from weeks ago flaring back to life, but looking at Lorenzo—standing tall, calm, and deadly in the dim blue light of the panic room—somehow grounded me.

"They're coming for us," I whispered.

"They can try," Lorenzo said coldly. He turned to the armory cabinet set into the wall of the panic room, punching open the glass doors.

Inside sat an arsenal of customized tactical firearms: suppressed submachine guns, combat shotguns, flashbangs, and heavy ceramic plate carriers. With practiced, lightning-fast precision, Lorenzo strapped a tactical vest across his chest, loaded three extended magazines into a customized SIG MPX submachine gun, and pulled a tactical combat knife from his boot sheath.

He looked back at me, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying promise.

"Clara. Listen to me very carefully," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding rumble. "Inside this panic room, you and Leo are safer than anywhere else on earth. The walls are reinforced with two inches of ballistic titanium. Nothing short of a tactical missile can breach this door."

"Lorenzo, no," I choked out, grabbing the sleeve of his tactical shirt. "You're going out there alone against twenty armed mercenaries. It's suicide!"

Lorenzo gently peeled my fingers away from his sleeve, holding my hands in his warm, calloused palms for one brief, intense second.

"I built the Duca and Rossi empires from blood and ash, Clara," he said softly, his voice steady and unyielding. "I lost my wife fifteen years ago. I nearly lost my son two weeks ago. I am not about to lose the only thing that brought light back into this house."

Before I could reply, Lorenzo pressed the exit release button. The heavy steel door slid open, revealing the dim, smoke-filled hallway outside.

He stepped out into the corridor, raising his weapon, and vanished into the shadows of the estate as the sound of approaching gunfire echoed up the grand staircase.
