Chapter 4 - Shadows of a Broken Past

The private medical lab in the basement of the Rossi estate was a sterile, high-tech fortress of gleaming stainless steel, humming centrifuges, and blue-lit monitors.
I sat on a small stool in the corner of the room, cradling a now-sleeping Leo in my arms, while Lorenzo stood over the main diagnostic console beside Marcus.
Marcus tapped rapidly on the keyboard, pulling up a multi-colored spectral graph that spanned across the central screen.
"The results are in, Boss," Marcus said, his voice grim. "The lab technician ran three independent assays on the residue left in the formula bottles. Clara was right."
Lorenzo didn't speak, but his posture stiffened into solid steel. "Spit it out."
"It’s not just a sedative," Marcus explained, pointing at a jagged spike on the graph. "It’s a synthetic neurotoxin derivative—a slow-acting paralytic compound known in high-end underground circles as Lazarus Fade. In small, repeated doses, it relaxes the infant's esophageal and stomach muscles completely, making it physically impossible for them to swallow or retain food. It mimics a severe congenital digestive disorder. To any ordinary pediatrician, it looks like natural failure to thrive."
A dark, lethal silence filled the lab.
"Who supplied it to Elena?" Lorenzo asked, his voice so quiet it barely registered above the hum of the computers, yet every word dripped with impending carnage.
"Elena’s bank accounts tell the story," Marcus replied, bringing up a second window filled with financial ledgers. "Three days after Leo was brought home from the hospital, fifty thousand dollars was wired into her offshore Swiss account from a shell corporation tied directly to the Moretti syndicate—our primary rivals on the North Side."
Lorenzo’s fist slammed down onto the steel console so hard the heavy monitors rattled on their mounts.
"Moretti," Lorenzo growled, the name tasting like venom on his tongue. "They couldn't touch me directly, so they bought my own staff to murder my son from the inside out."
"What do you want to do with Elena, Boss?" Marcus asked cautiously.
"Keep her locked in the dark," Lorenzo replied coldly. "When we dismantle the Moretti operation piece by piece, she will have a front-row seat to the execution."
Marcus nodded, then glanced sideways toward me. "And the men at the western gate? We brought them in. They’re tied up in holding cell B. They claim Clara stole ten thousand dollars from them before fleeing her apartment, and they’re demanding she be handed over as collateral."
My breath hitched. I pulled Leo slightly closer to my chest, my hands trembling. "I didn't steal anything from them," I whispered, tears pricking the corners of my eyes. "My ex—Marcus, his name is Derek—he ran up gambling debts with local loan sharks behind my back. When I tried to pack my bags and leave him, he shoved me down the stairs. The baby died because of him. And now they're trying to pin his debts on me."
Lorenzo turned slowly, walking over to where I sat. He stopped inches away, looking down at me with an intensity that made my skin tingle.
"Look at me, Clara," he commanded gently.
I raised my eyes, meeting his dark, piercing gaze.
"In this house, nobody accuses you of theft," Lorenzo said, his voice echoing softly in the sterile lab. "And nobody lays a hand on you. You are under my personal protection now."

Before I could process the sheer magnitude of his words, Lorenzo turned back to Marcus.
"Bring Derek and his two thugs up to the courtyard," Lorenzo ordered. "It’s time to teach some low-level street trash what happens when they hunt on Rossi ground."
