Chapter 4 - Breaking the Senate’s Shield

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news was dominated by the sudden, catastrophic collapse of Cole Construction. But for Senator Evelyn Hale, the news was merely an annoyance.
Sitting in her high-rise office overlooking Manhattan, Senator Hale sipped her dark roast coffee while reading a police report on her tablet. Her son, Brandon, sat across from her, chewing his fingernails nervously.
"You were stupid, Brandon," Evelyn said without looking up. "Beating a middle-class girl outside a science building? It’s messy. It’s uncouth."
"Mom, Ethan lost his mind! I barely touched her!" Brandon lied quickly.
"It doesn't matter," Evelyn sighed, tossing the tablet onto her mahogany desk. "I called Chief Ross at the 4th Precinct. He promised me the original physical evidence—specifically the bloodstained clothing and the surveillance backup drive—would be burned this morning. Once that’s gone, there’s no physical proof connecting you to the scene."
"Thanks, Mom," Brandon breathed a sigh of relief. "I knew you’d fix it."
"Of course I fixed it. I have an election in three months. I won't let a nobody’s daughter ruin my seat in the Senate."
At that exact moment, five miles away at the 4th Precinct, Chief of Police Thomas Ross was sitting in his dimly lit office. On his desk lay a sealed evidence bag containing Lily Walker’s bloodied clothes and a hard drive.
Chief Ross picked up a heavy silver lighter. He was about to flick the flame when the office lights suddenly flickered and went black.
"What the hell?" Ross muttered, standing up. "Hey! Who turned off the power?"
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
From the dark corner behind his bookcase, a deep, calm voice echoed through the silence.
"Put the lighter down, Thomas."
Chief Ross whipped around, pulling his sidearm instantly. "Who’s there?! Step into the light or I swear to God I’ll fire!"
A shadow moved. I stepped out from the darkness, wearing a tailored black suit. My eyes were fixed on the veteran cop.
Ross took one look at my face, and his weapon began to shake violently in his grip. The color drained completely from his cheeks.
"No..." Ross whispered, his voice cracking. "No... you died. You disappeared in 2007..."
"I changed my name, Thomas," I said quietly, stepping closer. "I became a father. I built a quiet life. And you just helped a corrupt politician cover up the attack on my daughter."
"I—I didn't know!" Ross gasped, dropping his gun onto the desk as if it were burning hot. "I swear to God, Ghost, I didn't know she was yours! Senator Hale offered me a million dollars in an offshore account! She said it was just some non-entity girl!"
"She is my entire world," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.
I reached into my pocket and placed a small USB drive on the desk next to his gun.
"On that drive," I continued, "is every wiretap recording of Senator Evelyn Hale buying votes, laundering campaign funds through offshore charities, and ordering you to destroy evidence tonight. You have thirty minutes to hand that drive—and Lily’s evidence—directly to the State Attorney General."
"And if I don't?" Ross stammered, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes.
"If you don't," I leaned over his desk, looking straight into his soul, "I will remind this city why men used to cross the street just to avoid saying my name."
Ten minutes later, Chief Ross didn't just call the Attorney General—he held a live press conference on the steps of the precinct.

By noon, television screens across the nation broadcasted the shocking news: Senator Evelyn Hale indicted on charges of bribery, obstruction of justice, and evidence tampering in connection to a brutal violent crime.
Brandon Hale sat in his mother's luxury apartment, watching television as state troopers led his mother away in handcuffs. The shield was gone.
