Chapter 3 - The First Pillar Falls

The bass vibrated through the floorboards of Lumière, shaking the crystal glasses on the private table in the VIP booth.
Ethan Cole laughed, tossing back a shot of tequila. At twenty-one, Ethan was built like a linebacker, with a square jaw and the smug posture of someone who had never faced a consequence in his entire life.
"I’m telling you, man," Ethan yelled over the music, leaning toward Tyler Whitmore and Brandon Hale. "Her old man looked like a broke line cook. He was crying in the lobby! He’s not gonna do shit."
Tyler Whitmore, slender and wearing a ten-thousand-dollar watch, smirked as he poured more champagne. "My dad already talked to the dean. The girl’s scholarship is being 'reviewed' for conduct violations. She won't even be on campus next semester."
Brandon Hale, the son of Senator Evelyn Hale, adjusted his silk jacket. "My mom talked to the precinct captain. The case file is practically in the shredder. Relax, boys. We’re untouchable."
Suddenly, Ethan’s phone began to vibrate violently on the table. He picked it up, expecting a text from a girl, but saw his father’s name flashing across the screen.
He answered with a chuckle. "Dad? It’s two in the morning—"
"Ethan, where the hell are you?!" His father’s voice wasn't just angry; it was trembling with outright panic.
Ethan’s smile faltered. "I’m at Lumière with the guys—"
"Get home right now! The FBI just raided Cole Construction headquarters! They have federal warrants for racketeering, tax evasion, and union fraud! Every bank account we own was frozen five minutes ago!"
"What?" Ethan froze. "Dad, that’s impossible! You have judges on payroll!"
"Not anymore!" Marcus Cole screamed into the receiver. "The Department of Justice received an anonymous digital package twenty minutes ago containing thirty years of off-book ledgers! Every senator, judge, and inspector I ever bribed is being taken into custody right now! They’re seizing the house, Ethan! They’re seizing everything!"
The line went dead.
Ethan stood up, his face drained of all color.
"Ethan? What’s wrong?" Brandon asked, frowning.
Before Ethan could answer, the heavy oak doors of the VIP lounge were kicked open. Four men in dark suits stepped inside, flanked by federal agents carrying tactical gear.
The lead agent walked straight up to Ethan’s table.
"Ethan Cole?" the agent asked.
"Do you know who my father is?!" Ethan sneered, trying to mask his rising terror.
"Marcus Cole?" The agent gave a cold, deadpan expression. "Yes. He was taken into federal custody six minutes ago. And as for this venue..." The agent looked at Tyler. "Whitmore Holdings is currently undergoing a emergency receivership. This club is officially a crime scene. Everyone out."
The music stopped. The flashing lights died, replaced by harsh white emergency bulbs.

Across the street, parked in the shadows of an unlit alleyway, I sat in the back of a black town car, watching through tinted glass as Ethan Cole was marched out onto the sidewalk in front of dozens of flashing news cameras, stripped of his security, his money, and his pride.
Phase one was complete.
