Chapter 7 - The Trial and Reclaiming the Name

The civil and criminal asset trial of State of Georgia & Chloe Miller v. Damian Prescott took place four months later in the Fulton County Superior Court.
The courtroom was packed with local journalists, former clients of Miller Creative, and representatives from regional women's advocacy groups who had rallied around Chloe's story.
Damian sat at the defense table wearing a drab blue prison jumpsuit. His expensive velvet jackets were gone. His hair was messy, his eyes were sunken, and his arrogant swagger had been completely crushed under the weight of eighteen felony counts.
When Chloe took the witness stand, the entire courtroom went silent.
She wore a sharp navy blue blazer, her hair pulled back neatly, her posture elegant and powerful. She looked every bit the successful, brilliant creative director she had been before Damian had entered her life.
Robert Vance led her through her testimony.
"Ms. Miller," Robert asked softly. "Can you describe for the court what happened on the night of November 14th at The Hearth?"
Chloe looked straight across the room at Damian. He couldn't even meet her gaze; he kept his eyes fixed on the wooden table in front of him.
"My husband refused to pay me for eight months of design work," Chloe testified, her voice clear and resonant. "When I asked to return to my private studio, he locked my hardware in his safe, took my phone, and restricted my food intake. He told me I was useless, that my talent belonged to him, and that I was nothing without his restaurant."
She paused, taking a deep, calm breath.
"He forced me to scrub the kitchen floor on my knees and eat scrap food left on dirty plates by customers to 'teach me humility,'" she continued. "He thought he could break my spirit. But he forgot that my mother taught me how to stand up for myself."
A murmur ran through the gallery. Two female jurors wiped away tears.
When the judge, the Honorable Evelyn Carter, delivered her final ruling three days later, her words were scathing.
"Mr. Prescott," Judge Carter stated, looking down from the bench with cold fury. "Your behavior toward your wife and your employees represents the absolute worst of human arrogance, greed, and cruelty. You used economic violence and physical deprivation to enslave a brilliant artist for your own financial gain."
The judge slammed her gavel down hard.
"The court hereby orders the immediate, complete annulment of your marriage to Chloe Miller. The fraudulent assignment contract regarding Miller Creative is declared null and void. All intellectual property, software, and digital assets are returned exclusively to Ms. Miller."
Judge Carter continued, reading from the order:
"Furthermore, the court awards Ms. Chloe Miller $140,000 in back pay, $300,000 in punitive damages, and awards her full ownership of the commercial real estate lease previously held by The Hearth to satisfy these judgments. Mr. Prescott, you are hereby transferred to the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections to begin serving your six-year criminal sentence."

Damian broke down, sobbing pathetically as court marshals handcuffed his legs and led him away through the side door.
Chloe didn't watch him leave. She turned around, walked down the aisle of the courtroom, and fell into my open arms as the gallery erupted into applause.
