Chapter 3 - The Sheriff and the Safe

At 9:30 AM the following morning, two marked Fulton County Sheriff cruisers pulled up outside The Hearth.

Damian Prescott was standing near the front entrance, wearing a crisp Italian suit, talking on his phone while supervising a valet attendant setting up stanchions for the upcoming lunch rush. When he saw my Buick pull up behind the police cruisers, accompanied by Robert Vance’s black Lincoln Town Car, his charming smile vanished, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl.

Deputy Sheriff Miller, a broad-shouldered officer with a stern face, stepped out of his car and approached Damian.

"Damian Prescott?" Deputy Miller asked, holding a blue folder.

"Yes?" Damian replied coldly, smoothing his tie. "What is the meaning of this? I am opening a premier dining establishment in two hours."

"I am serving you with a temporary protective order issued by the Superior Court of Fulton County," Deputy Miller announced loudly enough for his valet staff to hear. "You are ordered to stay at least five hundred yards away from Chloe Miller-Prescott and Margaret Miller. Furthermore, under court order, Ms. Miller-Prescott is here with legal counsel and law enforcement to retrieve her personal items, design equipment, and financial documents."

Damian’s jaw twitched. His eyes darted to the Buick, where Chloe sat in the passenger seat beside me. She was visibly shaking, but she was looking directly at him.

"This is ridiculous!" Damian snapped, stepping toward the officer. "She is my wife! She left our home during a psychotic episode! She took company property—"

"Step back, Mr. Prescott," Deputy Miller warned, resting his hand casually near his sidearm. "If you take one step closer or attempt to interfere with this order, you will be placed under arrest immediately for obstruction and violation of a court mandate."

Robert Vance stepped out of his car, carrying an armful of legal folders. He walked straight up to Damian, looking down his nose at the younger man with complete contempt.

"Mr. Prescott," Robert said smoothly. "I am Robert Vance, senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Associates. My client, Chloe Miller, is exercising her legal right to reclaim her property. My team will be entering your office now. If any of her digital hardware, hard drives, or personal files are missing, I will personally request a judge to issue a bench warrant for your arrest on spoliation of evidence."

Damian turned red, his refined facade cracking to reveal the ugly, desperate bully underneath. "She signed an assignment agreement! Her studio belongs to my parent company! Everything on those servers is mine!"

"We'll let a jury decide what belongs to you, Mr. Prescott," Robert smiled coldly. "Now, stand aside."

While Deputy Miller stood over Damian near the front bar, Robert, Chloe, and I walked into Damian’s back office. The room smelled of expensive cologne, cigar smoke, and polished mahogany.

Chloe walked over to the heavy black safe sitting in the corner of the office. Her hands trembled as she pressed her fingers against the keypad.

"He forced me to program it with his birthday," she whispered, her voice cracking. "0-4-1-2."

The safe clicked open.

Inside, stacked neatly between rows of cash envelopes and tax documents, was a thick leather binder labeled Miller Creative / The Hearth - Operations.

Chloe pulled the binder out, her eyes widening as she flipped through the pages.

"Mom... look," she gasped.

I leaned over her shoulder. Inside were eight months of detailed invoices created by Chloe for branding, menu engineering, social media campaigns, architectural interior layouts, and promotional graphics—totaling over $140,000 in professional services.

On every invoice, Damian had written the word WAIVED - SPOUSAL CONTRIBUTION.

But underneath those invoices was something even more damaging: a secondary set of cash receipts and hand-written ledger books detailing off-the-books payments to un-documented kitchen workers, systematically under-reporting cash revenue from the restaurant, and a fraudulent bank loan application where Damian had forged Chloe’s signature to secure a $250,000 line of credit using her mother’s Baltimore property as secondary collateral.

Robert Vance gasped as he scanned the loan documents.

"My God," Robert whispered, a cold smile breaking across his face. "The foolish boy didn't just abuse your daughter, Margaret. He handed us the key to his own prison cell."
