Chapter 5 - The Friday Night Raid

Friday evening at 8:00 PM is peak dining hour at The Hearth.

The restaurant was filled with Atlanta’s wealthy food critics, local politicians, and high-society couples. Soft jazz played through the speakers, chandeliers cast a warm glow over white tablecloths, and waiters in crisp black aprons carried plates of steak and wine.

Damian stood near the host stand, wearing his finest charcoal velvet jacket, greeting a local councilman and his wife. He was holding court, oozing charisma, pretending that his world wasn't crumbling beneath his feet.

Then the front glass doors swung open.

It wasn't just two police officers. It was a joint task force consisting of four Fulton County Sheriff deputies, Detective Morales, two investigators from the Georgia Department of Revenue, and an inspector from the State Department of Labor.

The jazz music seemed to stop as the room fell dead silent. Diners paused with their forks halfway to their mouths.

Damian’s face flushed red, then went completely white as Detective Morales marched straight through the dining room toward him.

"Damian Prescott?" Detective Morales announced loudly, her voice echoing clearly off the exposed brick walls.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Damian hissed under his breath, trying desperately to lower his voice. "I have high-profile guests here! You are ruining my business!"

"Damian Prescott, you are under arrest," Detective Morales stated, unholstering her handcuffs. "You are charged with felony identity fraud, grand larceny, forgery, gross wage theft, and felony violation of a protective order."

"This is a mistake! My lawyer will have you fired!" Damian yelled, backing away toward the bar.

Two Sheriff deputies stepped behind him, grabbing his arms and pulling them behind his back.

CLICK-CLACK.

The steel handcuffs locked around his wrists.

"Get your hands off me!" Damian screamed, losing all composure as he struggled against the officers. "I am a respected business owner! I built this place!"

While Damian was being pulled toward the exit, the state tax investigators slapped a bright neon orange notice onto the front doors of the restaurant: BUSINESS OPERATIONS SUSPENDED - PENDING JUDICIAL SEIZURE AND AUDIT.

Diners gasped, pulled out their phones, and began filming as Damian Prescott—the arrogant, celebrated chef-owner of The Hearth—was dragged out through his own front doors in handcuffs, cursing and sobbing in front of a dozen news cameras that had been tipped off by Robert Vance’s office.

I stood across the street on the sidewalk, holding a warm coat over my arm, watching the circus unfold. Beside me stood Chloe.

She wasn't trembling anymore. She stood tall, her chin raised, watching the man who had forced her to eat scraps on a dirty kitchen floor get loaded into the back of a police cruiser like common trash.

As the police car pulled away, its red and blue lights flashing against the wet pavement, Chloe took a deep, clear breath of fresh air—the first real breath she had taken in nearly a year.

"How do you feel, baby?" I asked softly.

Chloe looked at me, a genuine, strong smile breaking across her face. "I feel free, Mom."
