Chapter 7 - The Shadows in the Ashes

Three days after the arrests at the Vance Club, the dust began to settle, but the fallout was colossal.
The Vance political empire collapsed overnight. The news was dominated by headlines detailing the federal indictment of Senator Vance and Julian for financial treason, murder conspiracy, and corporate sabotage. Vanessa Vance’s bail application was permanently denied, and she was remanded to a state correctional facility awaiting trial for felony child abuse.
At the Sterling estate, the atmosphere had completely changed.
The heavy, suffocating silence that had hung over the mansion for two years was gone. Sunlight flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The smell of scorched hair and fear had been replaced by the rich aroma of fresh coffee and baked blueberry muffins.
I stood in the sunlit kitchen, wearing comfortable jeans and a green sweater, helping Bella roll out pastry dough on the marble island.
Bella was laughing—a sweet, musical sound that filled every corner of the house.
“More flour, Sarah!” Bella said, her voice growing stronger and clearer every day. She grabbed a handful of flour and lightly patted my cheek, leaving a dusty white mark.
“Hey!” I giggled, reaching out to tickle her sides. “You’re turning me into a muffin!”
Bella squealed with delight, ducking behind the kitchen island.
From the doorway, Arthur watched us. He was leaning against the frame, holding a tablet, a rare, soft smile playing on his lips. He was wearing a simple dark blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking younger and more relaxed than I had ever seen him.
“I see the new Vice Chair of the foundation is hard at work,” Arthur teased, walking into the kitchen.
“We are making executive muffins, Mr. Sterling,” I replied, wiping flour off my nose with my arm.
Arthur stopped beside me. He reached out and gently used his thumb to wipe the remaining flour from my cheek. His fingers lingered against my skin, sending a shiver of warmth straight down my spine.
“Call me Arthur,” he reminded me softly.
Our eyes met, and the playful atmosphere suddenly turned deep and charged. The unspoken feelings that had been building between us over the last harrowing week seemed to crystallize in the quiet room.
His tablet buzzed, breaking the spell.
Arthur looked down at the screen, his smile fading slightly into a serious expression.
“Is everything okay?” I asked.
“It’s the District Attorney,” Arthur said. “They’re finalizing the trial documents for Clara’s murder charge against the Vance estate. They need one final piece of evidence from Clara’s old private safe at our summer house in Long Island.”
He looked at me, a soft, hesitant look in his eyes.
“I haven't been back to that house since the accident,” Arthur confessed quietly. “I couldn't bring myself to step through the door.”
I reached out, placing my hand over his on the counter. “You don't have to go alone. Me and Bella will come with you.”
Arthur looked at our joined hands, then up into my eyes, his chest rising with a deep breath.
“Thank you, Sarah,” he whispered.

He couldn't have known that at that very moment, three miles away, a black unregistered van was parked near the estate gates, its occupant watching us through a high-powered telephoto lens.
The Vance empire was falling, but the deadliest rattlesnake always strikes right before it dies.
