Chapter 5 - The Snake Pit

Forty-eight hours later, the rain had cleared, leaving Manhattan washed in a cold, brilliant sunlight.

The Vance Private Club was an exclusive, six-story brick mansion on the Upper East Side, accessible only to politicians, billionaires, and old-money dynasties. Tonight, it was hosting the annual Metropolitan Business Leadership Gala—the very event Arthur had canceled at his own house two nights prior.

Julian Vance had taken over the hosting duties, turning the evening into a victory celebration, boasting to his elite inner circle that Sterling Heavy Industries was on the brink of collapse due to "internal executive instability."

He didn't know we were coming.

At 8:00 PM, a sleek, armored black Maybach pulled up to the red carpet in front of the club.

The valet opened the door.

Arthur stepped out first. He looked imposing, magnificent, clad in a custom Italian tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding stature. His dark hair was brushed back cleanly, his eyes cold and sharp as diamonds.

He turned and offered his hand back into the vehicle.

I took it.

I stepped onto the red carpet, my breath catching in my throat as camera flashes exploded around us.

I was no longer wearing my cotton maid’s apron or my simple housekeeper’s jeans. Arthur had brought his late wife’s personal stylist to the mansion that afternoon. I wore an exquisite emerald-green silk gown that draped gracefully over my curves, highlighting my fair skin and dark red hair. A delicate diamond choker glittered at my collarbone—a loan from Arthur’s private family vault.

Beside us, holding Arthur’s other hand, was Bella. She wore a matching velvet dress, her honey-colored hair styled into a high, elegant bun that completely hid the small bandage near her ear. She walked with her chin up, holding her father’s hand with quiet confidence.

The reporters on the sidewalk went wild.

“Mr. Sterling! Is it true Vanessa Vance was arrested for child abuse?”

“Arthur! Who is the woman with you?”

“Is Sterling Heavy Industries facing a hostile takeover?”

Arthur ignored the shouts, escorting me and Bella up the grand marble steps into the club’s gilded foyer.

Inside, three hundred of the city’s most powerful people were mingling with champagne flutes in hand.

The moment Arthur walked through the heavy double doors, the chatter in the room instantly died.

Glasses stopped halfway to lips. The string quartet in the corner faltered, losing their rhythm.

At the center of the room, standing near a towering champagne fountain, was Julian Vance.

Julian looked remarkably like his stepsister Vanessa—sharp, handsome features, pale blonde hair, and eyes as cold and calculating as a reptile’s. Beside him stood his father, Senator Richard Vance, a heavy-set man with silver hair and a politician’s fake, practiced smile.

Julian’s eyes locked onto Arthur, then shifted to me, and finally landed on Bella.

For a fraction of a second, absolute, unadulterated shock crossed Julian’s face. He hadn't expected us to survive his intimidation attempt, let alone show up at his sanctuary looking like royalty.

Julian recovered quickly, smoothing his silk tie and stepping forward with an arrogant, condescending grin.

“Arthur!” Julian called out, his voice carrying across the silent ballroom. “What a surprise! We heard you were having... domestic troubles at the estate. We didn't think you’d have the courage to show your face tonight.”

Arthur walked down the center aisle, his heavy dress shoes echoing against the marble floor. Me and Bella stayed right by his side, unwavering.

“I don't hide in the dark, Julian,” Arthur said, his baritone voice cutting through the room like a sword. “That’s a habit reserved for cowards and snipers.”

Several guests gasped, whispering behind their gloved hands.

Senator Vance stepped forward, trying to play peacemaker. “Now, Arthur, let’s be reasonable. What happened with Vanessa was a tragic misunderstanding. She’s young, she was overwhelmed—”

“She burned my daughter with a curling iron, Senator,” Arthur interrupted, his tone turning into liquid nitrogen. “And your son sent a rifle round through my kitchen window two nights ago.”

The ballroom broke out into frantic, excited whispers.

Julian’s grin vanished, replaced by a dark snarl. He took a step toward Arthur, leaning in close so only we could hear.

“You have no proof, Sterling,” Julian hissed softly. “The police are in my father’s pocket. The D.A. will drop Vanessa’s charges by tomorrow morning, and your company stock is going to plunge twenty percent when the market opens.”

I stepped forward, looking Julian dead in his eye.

“He doesn't need the local police, Julian,” I said clearly, my voice ringing out across the quiet ballroom.

Julian sneered down at me. “Shut up, maid. You’re out of your depth.”

“She’s not a maid,” Arthur announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings so every billionaire in the room heard every word. “Sarah Jenkins is the new Vice Chair of the Sterling Family Foundation. And she’s the woman who just delivered your private server keys to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

On cue, the massive oak doors of the club burst open once again.

Six federal agents in dark suits, led by a female Senior Special Agent holding a federal warrant, marched into the ballroom.

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color.

“Julian Vance! Senator Richard Vance!” the lead agent called out, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate corporate terrorism. Hands behind your back!”
