Chapter 8 - The Legal Avalanche

Three months later, the State Supreme Courthouse was surrounded by news vans and reporters.

The case of State v. Allison Walker and Victor Vance had gripped the entire city. The shockwaves of the video evidence, combined with the massive financial fraud scheme, had turned the trial into a national headline about elder abuse, corporate greed, and justice.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a crisp black suit. Beside me sat Jade, wearing a smart grey dress, her forehead now healed, leaving only a tiny, faint mark above her eyebrow.

My mother sat between us, her hand resting warmly in mine. She looked healthier than she had in years—her weight had returned, her eyes were bright, and the fear that had shadowed her face for months was completely gone.

At the defense table, Allison and Victor sat wearing orange prison jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists. Their high-priced attorney, Richard Sterling, looked exhausted and defeated, surrounded by mountains of undeniable digital evidence.

Judge Thomas Vance—a veteran judge known for his zero-tolerance stance on elder abuse—knocked his gavel against the wooden block.

"The court is ready to pronounce sentence," Judge Vance announced, his voice booming through the silent courtroom.

He looked down over his glasses at Allison and Victor.

"In my thirty-five years on the bench," Judge Vance began, his tone heavy with righteous indignation, "I have rarely witnessed a display of cruelty as calculated, callous, and devoid of human empathy as the actions committed by the defendants."

He pointed toward the video evidence monitors mounted on the courtroom walls.

"You took an elderly woman—a survivor of a stroke who trusted you—and treated her with unspeakable brutality," the Judge continued. "You robbed her of her dignity, her life savings, and her health, all to fund a hollow lifestyle of greed and vanity. And when a brave young woman stepped forward to protect her, you struck her with violent contempt."

Allison bowed her head, sobbing quietly, but there was no sympathy left in the room.

"On the charges of federal wire fraud and grand larceny," Judge Vance declared, "I sentence Victor Vance to eighteen years in a state maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole."

Victor slumped in his chair, staring blankly at the floor as his life crumbled into dust.

"On the charges of felony elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and corporate forgery," Judge Vance turned his gaze to Allison, "I sentence Allison Walker to twenty-two years in the State Women’s Correctional Facility."

Allison let out a piercing shriek, collapsing against the defense table, begging the judge for mercy.

"Court is adjourned," Judge Vance declared, striking his gavel with a loud, final CRACK.

As the bailiffs dragged Allison and Victor out through the side doors, Allison caught my eye one last time. I didn't look at her with anger. I didn't look at her with hatred. I looked at her with complete, absolute indifference.

She was a ghost of a past that could no longer hurt my family.
