Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Estate

At 3:00 PM on Saturday, a glossy black luxury SUV pulled into the driveway of my suburban home.
Allison stepped out, wearing a dark red dress and large sunglasses, trying to look composed despite her recent arrest. Beside her was Victor, looking ragged, his tie loosened, dark circles beneath his eyes.
They had been released on heavy bail posted by an offshore associate, but they knew the clock was ticking. Their bank accounts were frozen, their credit cards declined, and their legal bills mounting by the hour.
Their plan was simple: enter the house, seize every valuable item left inside, and sign an emergency cash sale deed to an unscrupulous real estate investor who had offered them three hundred thousand dollars under market value for an immediate cash closing.
Victor pushed the front door open with his master key.
"Hurry up, Allison," Victor muttered nervously, looking over his shoulder at the street. "The buyer’s representative will be here in twenty minutes. We sign the deed, take the cash cashier's check, and get to the airport before the state police issue a flight restriction."
"I can't believe Ryder did this to us," Allison spat, tearing open the hall closet and throwing coats onto the floor as she searched for my mother's remaining silver. "He was supposed to be a quiet, obedient engineer! He was supposed to stay in Texas and keep sending checks!"
They walked into the grand living room—and froze.
Sitting in the center of the room, on a high-backed leather chair, was me.
I was dressed in a dark suit, holding a remote control in my hand.
Standing beside me was Detective Miller, along with two uniformed officers and two representatives from the State Attorney General’s Office.
Surrounding us on every wall were six massive 65-inch television screens—screens I had installed that morning.
Every single screen was playing high-definition, looped footage of Allison abusing my mother, withholding her medication, hitting Jade with the silver spoon, and counting stolen cash with Victor at the kitchen island.
The crystal-clear audio of their voices filled the cavernous room, echoing off the high ceilings:
"You are a burden, Martha... A broken old machine taking up space in my house..." "Victor needs the money by five o'clock... Sign the papers or stay in the dark..."
Allison dropped the leather bag she was holding. Her face turned ghost-white.
"Ryder..." she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "What... what is this?"
"This is your legacy, Allison," I said softly, pressing a button on the remote to pause the video on a frame showing her face twisted in rage as she struck Jade. "This is the footage that was broadcast ten minutes ago to every major local news network, every member of your country club, and every business associate you ever boasted to."
Victor took a step back toward the door, but two officers stepped into the foyer, blocking the exit.
"You can't do this!" Victor yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria. "This is private property! Allison is a fifty-percent owner of this house!"
"Not anymore, Victor," a sharp female voice called out from the hallway.
A woman in a sharp gray suit stepped forward holding a sheaf of court documents. It was Sarah Jenkins, my head corporate litigator.
"As of 1:00 PM today, the County Superior Court granted an emergency injunction freezing all real estate assets held under the name of Allison Walker due to evidence of grand larceny and corporate forgery," Sarah announced smoothly. "Furthermore, Mr. Walker has officially filed for divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty, felony fraud, and domestic abuse."
"Divorce?!" Allison screamed, running toward me, her eyes wild. "Ryder, no! You can't leave me with nothing! I gave you four years of my life! You owe me!"
I stood up from my chair and looked down at her with total detachment.
"I gave you a home, Allison," I said, my voice echoing through the room over the sound of her recorded cruelty. "I gave you my trust, my love, and my respect. And you repaid me by tormenting a helpless old woman who loved you like a daughter."
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling out an arrest warrant.
"Victor Vance, Allison Walker," Detective Miller declared. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, witness tampering, and felony conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the officers forced Victor and Allison to their knees, clicking the steel cuffs over their wrists once more, Allison looked up at me, weeping hysterically, begging for mercy.

"Ryder! Please! Look at me! I’m your wife!" she sobbed.
I turned my back on her, picked up my coat, and walked out the front door into the clean afternoon sun without looking back even once.
