Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Mask Slips

At 8:00 AM, the front door unlocked.

Allison walked in, dressed in a white trench coat, designer sunglasses, and carrying a leather handbag. Behind her walked her brother, Victor Vance.

Victor was forty, tall, with slicked-back hair, wearing an expensive suit that didn't quite hide the tense, nervous posture of a man drowning in debt.

I was sitting at the kitchen island, drinking a cup of black coffee. The kitchen floor had been cleaned by the crime scene technician the police had sent earlier, but the air was still heavy with tension.

"Ryder," Allison said, stepping toward me with outstretched arms, her eyes glistening with fake tears. "Oh thank God you're sensible. I was so worried you’d let emotion get the best of you."

I didn't stand up. I didn't reach for her. I simply took a sip of my coffee and looked at her brother.

"Victor," I said calmly. "I didn't realize this was a family meeting."

Victor cleared his throat, adjusting his gold wristwatch—a watch I recognized as one my father had willed to me, which had gone missing from my safe three months ago.

"Ryder, man," Victor said, putting on a confident, practiced smile. "Look, as Allison's brother, I just wanted to make sure things don't get out of hand. You've been away working hard in Texas. You don't realize how stressful things have been here. Your mother’s mental decay has been... rapid. She’s become hostile."

"Hostile," I repeated flatly. "A seventy-eight-year-old woman who weighs ninety pounds and can barely walk."

"Dementia gives people unexpected strength, Ryder," Allison chimed in quickly, sitting on the stool beside me and placing her hand over mine. "Yesterday was a disaster, but Victor found a wonderful private eldercare community in upstate New York. Very quiet, very secluded. We can transfer her care rights to Victor’s management firm today. He can handle her assets so you don't have to worry about a thing."

"Transfer her care rights," I murmured. "And her accounts?"

Victor’s eyes lit up slightly before he tried to mask it with a grave nod. "Naturally. To cover the facility fees. We’d need power of attorney signed over by noon so we can halt any messy police investigations into yesterday's... misunderstanding."

I looked down at Allison’s hand on mine. Her manicured nails were flawless. The same hand that had slapped my mother and locked her in the dark.

"Where is the paperwork, Victor?" I asked softly.

Victor quickly pulled a thick leather folder from his briefcase and set it on the marble counter.

"Right here," Victor said smoothly. "Just sign here as her primary kin, giving temporary conservatorship to my firm. Allison and I will take care of the rest. We’ll even drop the charges against Jade if she agrees to leave the state quietly."

I opened the folder. The top document was a full power of attorney form, granting Victor Vance complete control over my mother’s real estate, bank accounts, and medical decisions.

I picked up my pen.

Allison held her breath, a faint, triumphant smirk touching the corner of her lips. She thought she had won. She thought eight months of isolation, manipulation, and gaslighting had made me weak, desperate to save my marriage at any cost.

I brought the pen down to the paper.

Then, slowly, I drew a thick, black line straight through the signature block.

Allison’s smirk vanished instantly. "Ryder? What are you doing?!"

I folded the document in half, then in quarters, and dropped it into my empty coffee mug.

"I spoke with the district attorney an hour ago, Victor," I said, my voice dead, flat, and echoed through the quiet kitchen. "And I spoke with the lead investigator from the State Financial Crimes Unit."

Victor’s face turned pale gray. "What... what are you talking about?"

I stood up slowly. At six-foot-two, I towered over both of them.

"I'm talking about the two hundred and fifty thousand dollars you transferred out of my mother's account into your offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands," I said, stepping closer to Victor. "I'm talking about my father's gold watch on your wrist. And I'm talking about the federal wire fraud charges that are being filed against you as we speak."

"Ryder!" Allison screamed, jumping off her stool, her voice dropping the sweet act entirely. "Have you lost your mind?! I am your wife! You can't talk to my brother like that!"

"You're not my wife anymore, Allison," I said, looking down at her with pure disgust. "You're a suspect in an ongoing felony assault and elder abuse investigation."

Victor backed away toward the front door, his hands trembling. "Allison, we're leaving. Now. He’s bluffing."

"He's not bluffing, Victor," a stern voice called out from the front hallway.

Three uniformed police officers and a detective in a gray suit stepped into the foyer.

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Victor Vance? Allison Walker?" Detective Miller announced firmly. "You are both under arrest for grand larceny, financial exploitation of an elderly adult, and conspiracy."

"No!" Allison shrieked, backing away toward the patio doors. "Ryder, tell them to stop! You can't do this to me! I'm your wife! I love you!"

May you like

"You didn't love me, Allison," I said quietly as the officers grabbed her arms and pulled her hands behind her back. "You just loved the house, the money, and the power you thought you had over a helpless old woman."

As the steel cuffs clicked tightly over Allison’s wrists, she began to scream curses at me, her mask completely destroyed, revealing the vicious, ugly monster beneath.
